On the left of the picture, a Dutch flagship in broadside view, flying the Dutch flag, is preparing to enter a Mediterranean harbour.
Fluyts were widely used by the Dutch during the 17th century as trading ships.
Their great advantage was that since they only required a small crew to handle them they were economical to operate.

 Fluyt Information
A fluyt or a flute (pronounced as "flight") is a type of sailing vessel originally designed as a dedicated cargo vessel.
The design of fluyts was largely similar to that of the early galleons.
At times fluyts were also armed and served as auxiliary vessels, which was a common practice in the Baltic Sea.

 Fluyt Ship
During this period the ultimate design of the fluyt depended on developments with such types as the buyscarveel, boeier and vlieboot.
The several variations of the fluyt type ships lead to the name becoming a generic term for any Dutch cargo ship of the period.
Yacht Heemskerk and the Fluyt Zeehaen were the two ships used by Abel Tasman on his voyage to the mysterious 'Southland' in 1642.

Fluyts aren't fast anyway, but at this angle the wind is actually slowing down the fluyt.
At this time the fluyt would probably make a left U-turn (it's trying to ram since it knows it has no other chance), and might even be able to board the SOL before it can reload its guns for another volley (remember, we've got 300 men loading 80 cannons!).
The wind is probably pushing the fluyt so that it turns north or west, meaning its side is to the SOL and would sustain a major hit.

Fluyt can fish as well as fight, transport, and i believe build units.
And about fluyts I do not know, I always thought they were identical (or as similar as to make no difference).

The Fluyt (pronounced 'Flight') Class is an older design dating back back to 2277, when the first of it's class was launched.
Conditions aboard a Fluyt are not seen as ideal, but crews eventually become used to, and even attached, to the utilitarian feel of the vessel.
Fluyts are very versatile, their range can be extended with fuel pods, and their design allows for a wide variety of cargoes to be carried attached to it's hull, from ore containers to colonial transport duty, the Flutys can do it all.

Ships expenses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
This figure compares favourably with the overall figure given by Hudde in Bruijn et al for a fluyt's expenses in 1685 of 2172, depending on the complement of men.
Using the Uitdorp as example, a fluyt which made the East Indies run in 1670, the crew complement is 82 seafarers (including merchants until the 18th century, when they traveled listed as passengers) and 45 soldiers.
The breakdown of positions given was chosen to illustrate the broad range of ship's positions, but keep within standard practise and expense for a ship's company.

The somewhat peculiar hull form of the fluyts with strongly inward rounded frames and the round stern is clearly shown in the ship model.

All this trade required durable, efficient, and cheaply built ships that could operate in the rough waters of the North and Baltic Seas as well as the shallow coastal waterways that were typical of the Netherlands.
The fluyt was both sturdy enough to withstand rough seas and shallow draught for inland waterways.
The fluyt also had simpler rigging that used winches and tackles, thus requiring a crew of only 10 men compared to 20-30 on other European ships.

While listening to Swing and Circle On The Fluyt, it soon transpires that Middle 9 doesn’t actually have much in common with the likes of Mono, Te’ or Toe other than being Japanese and having no vocals.
Opening track ‘Ionie’ – the best and certainly the most structured of the five songs – immediately launches into a fantastically frenetic, upbeat haze of plucked bass, drums and guitar, with a vibraphone carving out an incredibly catchy riff.

Certainly by the close of the 17th century the Kat was growing in size and soon to begin to eclipse the Fluyt, which other northern countries had copied.

The museum website says that Queen Anne's Revenge started out as a British vessel, was captured by French privateers during the War of the Spanish Succession, and was modified to a fluyt ("en flute") by her captors, who then used her in the slave trade after the war's end.
I Googled Queen Anne's Revenge with the phrases "not a fluyt" and "wasn't a fluyt," using all the spellings I know of "fluyt," and found nothing, so I can't find anyone contradicting the apparently widespread impression that Queen Anne's Revenge was a fluyt.
Botting spelled "fluyt" as "flute." That may help, although you'll probably get lots of hits for the instrument of the same name as well.

 Jacob van Eyck Quarterly 2006 / 4
It is strange then that in 1644 he chose to reserve 'fluyt' for the title of an anthology — Der Goden Fluit-hemel — that also contained works for violin, while its partner edition, Jacob van Eyck's Euterpe, was given a more neutral title despite being more specifically intended for the hand-flute.
So the term 'fluyt', now freed up, could be applied to Van Eyck's work, and thus the name Der Fluyten Lust-hof (The Flute's Pleasure Garden) was most likely born.
In choosing this pastoral-sounding title, Jacob van Eyck and Paulus Matthijsz showed themselves to be children of their time.
