Flight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flight is the process by which an animal or object which is heavier than air achieves sustained movement either through the air by aerodynamically generating lift or aerostatically using buoyancy, or movement beyond earth's atmosphere, in the case of spacecraft.
Flying tree frogs use greatly enlarged webbed feet for a similar purpose, and there are flying lizards which employ their unusually wide, flattened rib-cages to the same end.
Among living animals that fly, the wandering albatross has the greatest wingspan, up to 3.5 metres (11.5 feet); the trumpeter swan and the great bustard compete for the greatest weight, at around 24 kilograms (38 pounds).

 Bayer Animal Health: Stable Fly
Stable flies are also common in cattle farms and are similar in appearance to house flies at first glance, but can easily be distinguished by their biting habits.
The mouth parts of these flies are formed into a sharp proboscis which can be seen under the head pointing forward, parallel to the resting surface.
The larvae of this species develop in moist vegetable matter often contaminated by animal urine and faeces and therefore will generally be found breeding outside farm buildings and often around the edges of buildings, but in various areas of pasture as well.

 Bayer Animal Health: House Fly
Although these flies can travel several kilometers under favorable conditions, they generally remain in the vicinity of their breeding sites.
Since both adult flies and larvae have relatively distinct habitats it is possible to direct control action against both the adult and larval stages.
The adult flies we see represent only a small percentage of the fly population present in a dairy farm or feedlot.

AFRICAN ANIMAL TRYPANOSOMIASIS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
This trypanosome readily persists in areas free of tsetse flies (for example, in Central and South America and in the Caribbean), where it is transmitted mechanically by biting flies or contaminated needles, syringes, and surgical instruments.
The severity of the clinical response is dependent on the species and the breed of affected animal and the dose and virulence of the infecting trypanosome.
Early problems with breeding of the male flies have been overcome, and field trials have been done in both east and west Africa to determine the effectiveness of this approach in vector control.

 Domestic Flies, HYG-2111-96
Domestic flies, often called "Filth Flies," are not only a nuisance by their presence, but are important from a human and animal health standpoint.
These flies are often attracted to dead animals, animal wounds, and feces-caked hair or wool on pets and farm animals.
A simple fly swatter or folded newspaper is effective indoors against a few individual flies (thin wire stems and natural fiber head swatters are superior to the plastic ones).

The fly itself may extend its territory but long distance spread is more likely to be associated with the transport of infected animals to another location.

Animal Planet :: News :: Report: Snails Fly?
30, 2006 — Somehow, the animal kingdom's least-likely island-hopping creatures — land snails — have managed to jump from Europe to the Azores, then leap 6,000 miles of snail-dissolving ocean to the isolated Tristan da Cunha island group, deep in the South Atlantic.
One possibility is that a tiny juvenile member of the hermaphroditic snail became stuck in the feathers of a wading bird that was blown off course and ended up on the islands, said Richard Preece, a co-author on the Nature paper.

 Animal-Human Hybrids Spark Controversy
Summary Mice with human brain cells and humans with pig tissue are only two real-life examples of chimeras—creatures that are part human, part animal.
Scientists have begun blurring the line between human and animal by producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that's part human, part animal.
Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing "spare parts," such as livers, to transplant into humans.

The chemistry and stylistic confidence borne of playing together for such a long time is evident on the album's assured songwriting and easygoing, front-porch grooves, which owe a major debt to both the folk-influenced aspects of the Grateful Dead and that band's contemporary equivalent in the jam bands of the 2000s.

Birds inspired our first attempts to fly, but our progress was limited until we learned that we could not fly like them.
Thanks to their light weight, great strength, and complex biological design, birds and other flying creatures can use their wings to create both lift and thrust, as well as to maintain control.
Though we still cannot fly like birds, we can now fly with them.

Amazing Fly Control with Fly Parasites
The female fly parasite is biologically driven to seek out a fly pupa in which to lay her eggs.
However, because of the differences in the life cycles of the fly and the fly parasite, and because migratory flies continue to enter the control area, a program of periodic releases is required for ongoing fly control.
The fly parasites can be used to control flies in cattle feed lots, dairy barns, poultry and hog operations, horse stables, llama pens, rabbitries, dog kennels, and other animal compounds.
