The settlement in FlyingFishCove now numbers some 250 inhabitants, consisting of Europeans, Sikhs, Malays and Chinese, by whom roads have been cut and patches of cleared ground cultivated.
Among the rocks then obtained and submitted to Sir John Murray for examination there were detected specimens of nearly pure phosphate of lime, a discovery which eventually led, in June 1888, to the annexation of the island to the British crown.

FlyingFishCove is a multi use recreational area for bathing, swimming, snorkeling, diving, paddle canoes etc. Yachts approaching the area must keep a look out for these activities, and not exceed an approach speed of 5 knots
The jetty in FlyingFishCove is an integral part of commercial ship operations, with the overhead gantry system used to launch and recover the pilot vessel and the flat lipped work barges.
In the most famous Eocene outcrop at FlyingFishCove there is a natural geological break between these two limestone groups in the form of a basalt flow that overlies the Eocene, and this basalt is the base of the section Adams and Belford studied.
In 2001, a wide range of samples were collected at the FlyingFishCove site, from both the yellow and the white limestone facies (see Figure 6).
FlyingFishCove was the type location for the only other common form Discocyclina oceanica Nuttall, and the specimens I saw were entirely consistent with Nuttall's (1926) original detailed notes.

Based on his recommendation, the Royal Navy survey vessel FlyingFish visited the island in 1887; found the island’s only anchorage, which is now called FlyingFishCove, and made an extensive collection of plants, animals and rock specimens.

Adjacent to the port area and the main mooring sites, the cove is located at the base of the settlement and home to the Kampong (Malay for village) and the mosque.
