USS Flying Fish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Three ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Flying Fish, named in honor of the flying fish, any of number of fishes of tropic and warm temperate seas whose long winglike fins make it possible for them to move some distance through the air.
The second Flying Fish, (SS-229), was a Gato-class submarine, commissioned in 1942 and struck in 1958.
The third Flying Fish, (SSN-673), was a Sturgeon-class submarine, commissioned in 1970 and struck in 1996.

Immediately the counterattack began, and as Flying Fish prepared to launch torpedoes at one of the destroyers, rapidly closing to starboard, her commanding officer was blinded by a geyser of water thrown up by a bomb.
Flying Fish dived for safety, enduring seven depth charge runs by the patrol vessel before it was joined by two destroyers who kept the submarine under attack for 5 hours.
Pressing on with her chase for 6 hours in the hope of finishing off the tanker, Flying Fish was detected and held down by aircraft and destroyers while the tanker escaped.

Gilyard, 64, is one of the few workers relegated to the backbreaking toil of wheeling the fish in the pushcart and heaving it into vans -- all because he doesn't have his driver's license, which would allow him to operate a hi-low.
The fish stations on the southern side of South Street, in contrast, are city-owned properties, leased by the individual wholesalers who inhabit them.
Then, the workers will store the unsold fish in freezers, close up shop, and deal with one of the biggest challenges of the day: getting rid of the fish stench that lingers even after they have changed their clothes.

USS Growler (SS-215) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two days later she conducted a submerged night attack on a freighter, surfacing to give chase when both torpedoes ran under the target and failed to explode; the freighter's quick exit into shallow waters prevented Growler from gun attack.
Patrolling amidst a large fishing fleet on 25 August, Growler sighted and fired at a large passenger freighter but all three torpedoes missed; after a three-hour depth charge attack, in which some 53 ash cans were dropped, Growler surfaced and almost immediate spotted a convoy.
After two hours of maneuvering, she failed to catch up with the main body of the convoy but did fire at and sink an ex-gunboat, Senyo Maru.
