DVD Verdict Review - Flying Leathernecks
When watching Flying Leathernecks, for example, we discover the blueprint for Top Gun (which, although by no means "recent," remains a constant favorite of college students everywhere) and other films of its type.
As old-fashioned war flicks go, Flying Leathernecks is standard stuff, with most of the drama derived from the philosophical differences between a commander and his subordinates.
Flying Leathernecks was the seventh film directed by Nicholas Ray, the director known best for bringing young James Dean to the screen in Rebel Without A Cause four years later.

But here, this tale of a tight-knit team of flying aces - and an arrogant maverick who finally sees his duty and sacrifices himself for the common good - is turned to the war effort.
The real-life Flying Tigers were organized by Brigadier General Claire Chennault to fight in defense of Burma (Myanmar).
Flying Tigers scored big by capitalizing on the nation's patriotic mood and by providing a bona fide hero in the person of Wayne (who never entered the service during the war, but portrayed military men five times between 1941 and 1945).

Flying Leathernecks is one of my favorite war dramas to watch on a boring, rainy, summer day.
John Wayne is a Marine avatior who drives his men to the edge during training and in the war, installing hatred in their hearts againist him, especially his second in command, played by Robert Ryan, who clashes with Wayne, but goes easy on the squad.

 DVD Savant Review: Flying Leathernecks
Guadalcanal was one serious campaign (my namesake Uncle was a Marine there) and Flying Leathernecks can't really be realistic about it; the obvious mission for this film was to entertain small fry and teens considering the service.
That said, Flying Leathernecks is a downright sane Howard Hughes film compared to some of his other productions.
Warners' DVD of Flying Leathernecks is a beauty, making it a pleasure to watch - I never saw the whole movie on television because of the crummy print quality.

That the realities of the world don’t live up to the idealized wishes of those in it is one of Ray’s key themes, and it’s by illustrating this gap that the film feels most like the work of its director.
Saddled with both the unfortunate task of sending his men to their possible demise and the unenviable position of authority over his stressed men, he still manages to exhibit compassion, thanks in no small part to one of John Wayne’s better performances.
Because of that sensibility, The Flying Leathernecks packs a surprising amount of intelligent insight in with its nationalistic rally cry.

John Wayne and Robert Ryan co-star in Flying Leathernecks, Nicholas Ray's intense 1951 war movie that managed to appeal to RKO studio chief Howard Hughes's passion for thrilling aerial footage while supplying Ray's own fascination with the human psyche under near-inhuman duress.
Emotions are further strained as Kirby's pilots are picked off one by one in grueling missions, leading to a crisis that ultimately forces each man to reevaluate his attitude toward sending men to their likely doom.
Flying Leathernecks is an entertaining John Wayne adventure about a squadron of Marine fighters stationed on Guadalcanal during the fierce fighting.

Flying Leathernecks was produced before the period of wet-gate printing, which enabled technicians to hide scratches and other abrasions on film elements.

While I'm in no way equating this film with a Nazi production, the point being made is that the Marines of the Air or Flying Leathernecks finally, six years after the end of the war, received their own deserved production, highlighting their bravery and technical part in WWII.
