Flying Nun Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flying Nun Records is the most influential independent record label in New Zealand.
The intention was to record the original local music of Christchurch but soon the label rose to national prominence by championing the emerging music of Dunedin, New Zealand.
The Pin Group's Ambivalence was the first release from Flying Nun, although it is widely assumed that Tally Ho by The Clean was the first release as it unexpectedly placed at #19 in the New Zealand charts, bringing the label unexpected profile and income.

in fact, with the emergence of low-cost 4-track recording in the early 80s (mostly brought about through chris knox and doug hood's huge involvement in the local scenes) flying nun recordings soon became known for the dunedin sound - a label that described the lo-fi, jangly asthetic of their high-light acts.
over the course of the 90s, bands started requiring more assistance with their recordings, as drifts away from their humble beginnings to a more high-fidelity approach meant the simple home-brewed studios of the past were no longer up to scratch.
these financial strains led to flying nun expanding their horizons, setting up european and australian bases, and even outsourcing their vinyl pressing plant.

 Merge Records - The Clean
Flying Nun became one of the most influential underground record labels on the planet, and The Clean became one of the most respected and influential (if somewhat mysterious) bands of their generation.
These are the songs that set Flying Nun out of the blocks at a pace that bewildered the label’s founder Roger Shepherd to the point that he remains a man with a permanently bewildered air about him to this day.
These recordings were mostly made by the band, with Chris Knox and Doug Hood at the helm of the trusty four-track for many of them.

 Flying Nun Records
Flying Nun Records was the first South Island "indie", formed in 1981 by Roger Shepherd, a record shop proprietor and music enthusiast of Christchurch, with the idea of releasing local bands who would not otherwise be signed.
Flying Nun's policy of releasing music that they liked, rather than music made for the marketplace, was farsighted and courageous.
Flying Nun has always been determined to support the network of artists it has helped and nurtured along the way and this is best shown in the releases of several great solo albums.

While I would never doubt the wisdom of the folks who compiled the absolutely mandatory The Clean Anthology (available on the mighty Merge Records in the US), it struck me as odd that while the first disc is a near-complete selection of pre-Vehicle material, they omitted this track, which I've always enjoyed quite a bit.
