Focke-Wulf Fw 189 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Focke-Wulf Fw 189 Uhu (Eagle Owl) was a twin-engine twin-boom three seat tactical reconnaissance and army cooperation aircraft.
The "Focke Wulf 189 Restoration Society" was formed to restore the aircraft to flying condition.

Focke-Wulf Fw 187 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the Bf 110, the Fw 187 was originally conceived as a single-seater, but a second seat for a radio operator/rear gunner had to be added on request by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM).
Despite an RLM requirement that the Fw 187 use Junkers Jumo 210 engines instead of the planned DB 600, the performance of the Fw 187 was generally superior to that of the Bf 110.
With the Fw 187 they could have had a successful long-range fighter in the Battle of Britain, which would have made an impact on the relative losses of the clashing air forces.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 187 Falke "Falcon"
The second prototype Fw 187 V2 was flying by summer of 1937 and it was destined to be the last single seat version.
The third prototype Fw 187 was radically altered, but to save weight and dimensional changes the extra position was as a radio operator with no defensive guns.
The next prototype Fw 187 V6 (CI-NY) was able to utilize two 1000 hp Daimler-Benz DB 600A liquid cooled engines and was outfitted with surface evaporation cooling to reduce the drag of coolant radiators.

The Fw 187's initial role was to be a fast interceptor, however, requirements from the powers that be dictated that the Falcon be a destroyer.
In 1943 the Fw 187 was considered for the night fighter role, but it's narrow fuselage did not allow the fitting of the necessary radar and equipment.
Regardless, by this time Focke Wulf was engrossed with the development of the Ta 154 and the concept was shelved.

The Fw 187 had an extremely narrow fuselage and its cockpit was so small, that the engine instruments had to be mounted on the inboard sides of the engine covering.
The Fw 187 had a full retractable landing gear, which was in flight fully covered for better aerodynamics (the V-2 had a crash landing because the right main landing gear broke, so this was in the early design stage aproblem as later for the ta154, too.).
Next, three Fw 187A-0 (based upon the third prototype) pre-serial planes were built and used since summer 1940 as a defense for the Focke-Wulf facilities at Bremen, later in the Winter inofficially at the 13.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 187A-0 Falke (1/72)
Focke-Wulf Fw 187 Falke was the Focke-Wulf's entry to the 1938 (or when it was) Zerstörer (heavy twin-engined fighter) competition.
It was in many aspects a better plane than Bf 110 which won the competition, but only about 7 prototypes and 3 pre-production planes were built (the latter carrying prominent numbers 1, 4 and 7 on the fuselages).
IMHO, the Fw 187 was a much better-looking airplane than the Bf 110, but probably the reason for turndown was that it used the DB 601 engines that were needed for the Bf 109.

The twin-engined Focke-Wulf Fw 187 was a contemporary of the Messerschmitt Bf 110, however production was limited to a handful of prototypes.
Developed by Professor Kurt Tank, the Fw 187 first flew in the summer of 1937.
The few Fw 187s built served in industry defense and were later operated by the Vaerlse Aerial Gunnery School.

 Second World War Books Review
When Kurt Tank's Fw 159 prototype lost to the Messerschmitt Bf 109 during the 1935 trials for a new standard Luftwaffe fighter, he sought to gain a contract for his firm with the design for a new twin-engine, single-seat fighter called the Fw 187.
Although the Fw 187 was faster and had a greater operating range, the Messerschmitt Bf 110 entered service as the Luftwaffe's twin-engine, twin-seat Zerstorer aircraft and the Focke Wulf project was cancelled.
In mid-1942 an upgraded, up-engined Fw 187 Kampfzerstorer was considered as a replacement for the Bf 110 when the planned replacement, the Me 210, proved unsatisfactory.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 261 Luft '46 entry
A tricycle landing gear arrangement was chosen, with a single nose wheel beneath the cockpit and double main wheels which retracted into the outer engine nacelles, although some drawings show a single wheel below each engine nacelle.
A crew of seven to nine men manned the Fw 261, with a total flight endurance of more than 22 hours.
The armament consisted of two twin MK 108 30mm cannon in remote controlled turrets below the cockpit, two HD 151 Z remote controlled turrets, one each above and below the fuselage ahead of the wings, and four MK 108 30mm cannon in the tail.

Remarks by Chris Pinn: "The Focke-Wulf 187 was originally designed as a single seat fighter along similar lines as aircraft such as the Westland Whirlwind.
It was then modified to compete with the Messerschmitt Bf 110 by changing it to a two seat 'Zerstörer' configuration.
As the Bf 110 had better performance as well as a rearward firing gun, production of the FW 187 was stopped after only three production aircraft had been built.

The Fw 189 was a very effective aircraft, maneuverable and sturdy.
There was also a Fw 189C five-seat trainer (few built), and a Fw 189B anti-tank aircraft with a small armored nacelle (The Hs 129 was preferred).

 Fw 187 Falke
Although it was never put into full production, it was a superb foundation for later twin engined German fighters.
The first model Fw 187 (this would be about 1937) was 50mph faster than the Bf 109 prototype which had the same engine, despite the fact that the Fw187 weighed almost twice as much and had twice the range.
Later the V3 adopted a twin seat cockpit and this version of the Fw187 was much more accomodating for the crew.

Special Hobby 1/72 Fw 187 Falke
For those like me with a penchant for twin-engined prop-driven fighters, the Fw 187 remains one of history’s great “why not?” options — like the possibility of a Merlin-engined Westland Whirlwind.
An outstandingly fast and well-armed aircraft, the single-seat Fw 187 Falke (“Falcon”) was clearly superior to the Messerchmitt Bf 110 but the latter was already in service and — when forced to become a twin-seater — the Fw 187 lacked the rear defence gun demanded by the RLM.
While there have been several vacform and resin Falkes, this is the first injection-moulded kit in 1:72 scale.
