The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 was a German all metal four engined monoplane that entered service as an airliner and later as long range reconnaissance and anit-shipping bomber aircraft for the Luftwaffe.
The Fw 200 was built to a Lufthansa specification with Dipl.-Ing.
There were three versions - the Fw 200A, B, and C. The Model A was a purely civilian plane used by Lufthansa, DDL in Denmark, and Syndicato Condor in Brazil.

The remaining six Fw 200C-0s were given the locally reinforced structure and simple armament comprising three 7.92 mm (0.31 in) MG 15 machine guns, one in a small (almost hemispherical) turret behind the flight deck, one in a rear dorsal cokcpit with a fold-over hood and the third fired from a rear ventral hatch.
The main addition to the Fw 200C-1 was a ventral gondola, offset as in the Japanese Fw 200 V10 but longer in order to provide room for a weapons bay (which was normally used to carry a cement bomb with 551 lbs (250 kg) ballistics dropped as a check on bombsight settings).
Oddly, the Fw 200C-4 went back to the HDL 151 turret and MG 15s elsewhere except for the front of the gondola, which had the MG 131 or MG 151/20 depending on whether or not the Lofte 7D was fitted.

For offensive purposes the Fw 200C was equipped with the low-altitude Revi bombsight, or the Lofte 7D sight for attacks from between 3500m and 4000m.
The answer was the Fw 200C, with some modest structural reinforcements, improved cowlings containing 850hp BMW 132H-1 engines with three-bladed propellers, and bomb crutches on the wings.
The Fw 200 crews were now instructed not to attack, and to evade all combat unless unavoidable.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 187 Falke "Falcon"
The next prototype Fw 187 V6 (CI-NY) was able to utilize two 1000 hp Daimler-Benz DB 600A liquid cooled engines and was outfitted with surface evaporation cooling to reduce the drag of coolant radiators.
The second prototype Fw 187 V2 was flying by summer of 1937 and it was destined to be the last single seat version.
The third prototype Fw 187 was radically altered, but to save weight and dimensional changes the extra position was as a radio operator with no defensive guns.

The Fw 190 V18 was later revised to Fw 190 V18/U1 standard with a revised powerplant (the DB 603A engine and a DVL TK-11 turbocharger), rated at 1,600 hp (1.193 kW) at an altitude of 35,105 ft (10700 m).
The Fw 190G-2 was a simple development of the Fw 190G-1 based on the airframe of the Fw 190A-5 with its longer nose section for an overall length of 29 ft 4.25 in (8,95 m).

 Focke-Wulf Fw 190
The Focke Wulf company's initial responses (based on the DB 601 engine) drew little interest, but their designer Kurt Tank proposed to use the eighteen-cylinder, air-cooled, radial BMW 139 in a fighter.
They soon found out, as the FW 190 bested the Spitfire Mark V. However, the four 7.9mm machine guns were not adequate firepower; an upgrade to heavier armament had been planned as soon as the guns were available.
For weaponry, the Fw 190A-1 carried four rifle-caliber machine guns, two in the cowling and two in the wing roots; all fired through the propeller arc.

Fw 200C-3/U4 The Fw 19 forward dorsal turret was restored and the 2 × 0.312 in (7.92 mm) MG 15 guns in the two beam positions were replaced by 0.51 in (13 mm) MG 131 guns.
Fw 200C-3/U2 This version retained the original type of forward dorsal machine gun position and the MG 151/20 cannon was replaced by a 0.51 in (13 mm) MG 131 trainable forward-firing gun.
The Fw 200/Hs 293 combination was not notably successful after its introduction in December 1943, and by June 1944 most of the surviving Fw 200s had been withdrawn from service as maritime patrol bomber and missile launch platforms for use as transports.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 190D
The Fw 190D-10 was an experimental version of the D-9 with an engine-mounted MK 108 cannon and two MG 151 cannon in the wing roots.
The general opinion of the pilots who flew the FW 190D-9 was that it was the finest propeller-driven fighter available to the Luftwaffe during the entire war.
The Fw 190D-12 was a fighter-bomber variant, which differed from the D-9 by having a three-stage supercharged Jumo 213F-1 engine rated at 2060 hp for takeoff mounted in a new, more extensively armored cowling.

The long-nosed Fw 190D was also developed into the Ta 152 after its designer, Kurt Tank-in which the installation of a 2,300 hp (with boost) DB 603 engine pushed the speed up to 745km/h (463 mph).

The Focke Wulf was for the early years of the war considered Germany's "other iron in the fire" as far as the Luftwaffe was concerned.
It is ironic that the Fw 190A-4 hates altitude, as she is one of the worst planes to be caught low-and-slow in.
The FW 190D9 also fires her 20mm cannon in the same time as her FW siblings, with the same ammunition loadout as the FW 190A8.

 Warbird Alley: Focke-Wulf Fw 190
Arguably, the Fw 190's greatest impact on the Allied war effort was to spur ever-greater advances in technology and aircraft design to counter its threat.
As the war progressed, the Fw 190 was developed into many variants as a pure fighter, a ground-attack fighter/bomber, and as a close-support aircraft.
For nearly a year, until the debut of the Spitfire IX, the Fw 190 was the unmatched champion of the air war.

 The Focke-Wulf FW-190
The Focke-Wulf design team was aware that the FW-190's armament was inadequate, having settled on the four machine guns due to temporary difficulties in obtaining heavier armament -- and in fact the A-1 was basically regarded as an operational evaluation type that was not entirely fit for real combat.
The next A-series subvariant, the "FW-190A-2", replaced the MG-17 machine gun in each wing root with a more potent Mauser belt-fed MG-151/20 20 millimeter cannon with 200 rounds per gun, providing a total armament of two machine guns and two cannon.
The BT series of munitions were also built in 200 kilogram (440 pound), 400 kilogram (880 pound), and 700 kilogram (1,540 pound) versions.

The resulting Fw 200 V-10 prototype introduced a ventral gondola and led to the Fw 200 C-0 as the prototype of a Luftwaffe aircraft which had never been requested or planned and yet which was to prove a most powerful instrument of war.
But, though the Fw 200 family continued to grow in equipment and lethality, the Allies fought back with longe-range Coastal Command aircraft, escort carriers and CAM (Catapault-Armed Merchantman) fighters and by mid-1944 surviving Condors were being forced into transport roles on other fronts.

The Focke-Wulf Fw 200, Heinkel He 177, Blohm and Voss BV 222 and Messerschmitt Me 261/264 were to all be compared to find the best aircraft for this purpose.
It was decided that any flights over 13500 km (8389 miles) would need in flight refueling, and General Jeschonnek had already turned down this option in February 1942 (even though initial in flight refueling tests with a Fw 58 and a Ju 90 had been successful).
On June 29, 1944, the Trial Establishments Headquarters definitely stated that the Me 264, as well as the Ju 390, would be unsuitable for operational deployment since its fitting with the entire military equipment and payload would excessively increase the takeoff weight and the wing load.
