Focke-Wulf Fw 190 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a single-seater, single-engine fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe, and one of the best fighters of its generation.
Fw 190A's were also to control the unmanned Ju 88 Mistel bomb carriers during the last days of the European WWII.
With the introduction of the North American P-51 in late 1943 and early 1944, the USAAF fighter units were gaining a distinct advantage over the Fw 190 in terms of speed.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 190
Fw 190V7 was used for testing of a heavier armament consisting of two 20 mm Rheinmetall-Borsig (Oerlikon licence) MG FF cannons (in addition to the four MG 17 machine guns), mounted in the wing center section just aft of the main gears attachment point.
Designed by Dr. Kurt Tank, the Fw 190 was built as a sturdy all-round fighter, rather than a lightweight interceptor; but the early Fw 190A's nevertheless proved clearly superior to the Spitfire Mk.V. The Fw 190 was a better fighter than the Bf 109, except at high altitude.
Fw 190A-5/U9 - experimental plane with heavier armament, it was fitted with 2x1 MG 131 13 mm machine guns in place of MG 17 guns in the fuselage; in the wings the MG FF canons were replaced by MG 151/20 E cannons.

The Focke-Wulf FW 190 in Afrika
FW 190 Jabo attacks weren’t limited to airfields, and during an attack on tanks on 8 April 1943, Lt Klemens Graf von Westerholt of III./SKG 10 was killed by a direct hit from an AA shell.
The FW 190 played an important part in Luftwaffe and Axis operations during the latter stages of the North African campaign, especially in Tunisia, and the units and pilots operating the type, men from II./JG 2, III./SKG 10 and Sch.G.2, proved themselves and their machines in testing conditions.
II./JG 2 was the premier Luftwaffe FW 190 unit in North Africa, and its combat record in the theatre proves this.

 Focke-Wulf 190
The FW 190 was known as a "pilots airplane," meaning she was a sweet ship to fly, light and easy on the controls (unlike the Bf 109, which was a handful).
In all, nearly 20,000 FW 190 aircraft of all types were completed by the end of the war, and the type was used by the air forces of Turkey, France (as the NC 900), and various of Germany's allies as well as the Luftwaffe.
The FW 190F-2 was a fighter bomber development of the A-5 that introduced the bubble canopy that then became standard for subsequent FW 190 models.

 PARKER INFORMATION RESOURCES
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Ranks with the Supermarine Spitfire, Vought F4U Corsair and North American P-51 Mustang as one of the best fighters of World War II.
The standard Fw 190A was quickly modified to perform a number of roles, particularly that of fighter-bomber in the F and G versions.
Meanwhile, the Fw 190 was also proving a good fighter-bomber, carrying a reasonable bomb load or, in some cases, rocket projectiles.

 Fw 190 A8 - 3
The Focke Wulf FW190 is a legendary German aircraft of the second world war which proved to be a deadly foe to Soviet, British and American airforces.
The basic layout of the Focke Wulf 190 was entirely conventional, being a monoplane with a nosemounted engine driving a tractor airscrew.
Improved versions of the Fw 190 were tested with such features as cabin pressurization and a water/methanol injection that increased the normal 1,600hp of the engine to 2,100hp for brief periods.

 Focke - Wulf FW 190
The FW 190 was first met in action by the Spitfires of the RAF in spring of 1941.
Fastest of all versons was the FW 190D, or long nosed 190, series with a Jumo 213A liquid cooled engine normally rated at 1 776 hp but capable of being boosted to 2 240 hp for short spurts at speeds of up to 426 mph.
Towards the end of the war when total FW 190 production amounted to 20 051 aircraft, designer Kurt Tank had his own name applied to the final development, the Ta 152.

WW2 Warbirds: the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger (Shrike) - Frans Bonné
The Fw 190 V18 was later revised to Fw 190 V18/U1 standard with a revised powerplant (the DB 603A engine and a DVL TK-11 turbocharger), rated at 1,600 hp (1.193 kW) at an altitude of 35,105 ft (10700 m).
The Fw 190G-2 was a simple development of the Fw 190G-1 based on the airframe of the Fw 190A-5 with its longer nose section for an overall length of 29 ft 4.25 in (8,95 m).
Fw 190A-8/R8 Assault-fighter, based on the Fw 190A-8/R7, and armed with 2 × fixed 30 mm MK 108 cannon in the outboard wing positions, 2 × 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon in the inboard wing positions, and 2 × 0.312 in (7.92 mm) MG 17 guns on the upper nose (like the Fw 190A-8/R2).

 Focke-Wulf Fw-190 fighter
Perhaps the most feared of all German World War 2 fighters, Focke Wulf's extraordinary Fw 190 was a fearsome and deadly opponent.
Another interesting development for the Fw 190 was the SG 116 Zellendusche and SG 117 Rohrblock weapons that mounted six 30mm cannon behind the cockpit with their barrels firing upwards.
Despite the modest size, the Fw 190 was quite heavy and yet it was to prove quite capable of carrying a fantastic diversity of weapons and other equipment.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 190
They soon found out, as the FW 190 bested the Spitfire Mark V. However, the four 7.9mm machine guns were not adequate firepower; an upgrade to heavier armament had been planned as soon as the guns were available.
The Focke Wulf company's initial responses (based on the DB 601 engine) drew little interest, but their designer Kurt Tank proposed to use the eighteen-cylinder, air-cooled, radial BMW 139 in a fighter.
The Fw 190 was built in a modular fashion, for easy repair and replacement in rough field conditions.

Finally, my article on the Focke-Wulf 190 G-8 will be the first in what I hope will be a series of articles, each outlining the production details of one of the FW 190 ground-attack variants.
One of these projects is a sequel to the FW 190 in North Africa book, this time covering FW 190 operations over Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Italy and southern France.
Continual development resulted in new variants, eventually seeing a radical change in shape with a new engine fitted to the FW 190 D (Dora), and in the final months of the war, the Ta 152 (designated Ta to honour designer Kurt Tank).

 Focke Wulf Fw 190 - Airlines - http://maxpages.com/pikasplanes/Focke_Wulf_Fw_190
The little Fw 190 whitch flew on June 1 1939 was at that time the most advanced fighter in the world.Apperently unknown to Allied intelligence, despite the highly public nature of the FW factory, it burst on the scene in Northern France in the summer of 1941.
When a flyable example happened to fall into RAF hands in June 1942 the FW 190 was held in even greater respect.Originally designed for the BMW 139 radial engine, the FW 190A production version actually had a heavier but generally more powerful unit in an extremely advanced low drag installation.
Dubbed Wurger (Shrike) a name whitch did not stick, it was designed at Focke Wulf at Bremen under Kurt Tank, the project team being headed by R. Blaser.
