Focke-Wulf Fw 61 helicopter - development history, photos, technical data
The obvious promise in the Fw 61's basic design led to a development contract for a 6-passenger feeder transport, the Fa 266 for Deutsche Lufthansa, and a prototype of this aircraft (D-OCEB) was completed during the early part of 1939.
In May 1937, some months before a similar feat was accomplished by the Breguet-Dorand helicopter, the Fw 61 made its first landing using autorotation, and in February 1938 the aircraft's controllability was convincingly demonstrated by Germany's celebrated aviatrix Hanna Reitsch, who flew the machine inside the Deutsch-landhalle sports stadium in Berlin.
The Focke-Achgelis GmbH was an offshoot of the Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau, established after Focke had been dismissed from the latter company by the Nazis as a political embarrassment.

The Focke-Wulf Fw 61 is regarded as being the first helicopter of the world which could be deployed for practical use.
In the same year, Focke presented the drafts of the helicopter Fw 61 to the German Ministry of Transport which then gave him an order to design and develop the helicopter.
To him, the legendary Fw 61 was solely a testing model that was not to be used as a cargo carrier due to its incapability of lifting useful payloads.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 190
The Focke Wulf company's initial responses (based on the DB 601 engine) drew little interest, but their designer Kurt Tank proposed to use the eighteen-cylinder, air-cooled, radial BMW 139 in a fighter.
They soon found out, as the FW 190 bested the Spitfire Mark V. However, the four 7.9mm machine guns were not adequate firepower; an upgrade to heavier armament had been planned as soon as the guns were available.
For weaponry, the Fw 190A-1 carried four rifle-caliber machine guns, two in the cowling and two in the wing roots; all fired through the propeller arc.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-11 by Ingemar Caisander (Tamiya and Bob Stephenson Conversion 1/48)
Since Tamiya's 1/48 scale Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 kit apparently would have pretty much fallen together on its own if built straight from-the-box (judged from earlier reviews of the kit) I decided to add a little challenge to the project by converting the aircraft into one of the late-war D-11 prototypes.
The D-11 variant of the venerable Focke-Wulf 190 was designed as a much-improved low-level interceptor fighter refinement of the "Langnasen Dora", incorporating many of the features found on the powerful Ta 152.
Based on rebuilt Fw 190A-8 airframes the D-11 mounted a new 35-litre Jumo 213F inverted V12 engine rated at 2060 hp for take-off.

The designations Fw 249 and Fw 261 were assigned in-house by Focke-Wulf, and not by the RLM.
The Fa 61 is sometimes called Fw 61, because the Focke-Achgelis company was a direct descendant of a special research department of Focke-Wulf.
For the later 8-183, Focke-Wulf initially assigned the number Fw 232, but this was changed by the RLM to Ta 183, because it conflicted with the Ar 232.
