Focus (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was founded by classically trained organist/flautist Thijs van Leer in 1969 and leaned heavily on two of the Netherlands' contemporary music's heavyweights, Thijs van Leer and Jan Akkerman.
In 1985 Van Leer and Akkerman reunited for an unsuccessful Focus album.
In 2001 Thijs van Leer re-formed Focus with Jan Dumée (guitar), Bobby Jacobs (bass) and Bert Smaak (drums) and recorded a new album called Focus 8.

 Focus Album reviews
Focus' music as a whole had little to do with what was heard on the song Hocus Pocus, deeper cuts on the record revealed a band that was able to capture a writing style that encompasses a wide variety of separate influences.
Double albums tell you the band recorded enough material to cram on to two discs, and the album is supposed to just simply stun and amaze you all the way through in a way that perhaps a single disc of material could not.
Focus' classic live-album recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London was released at the height of their popularity, and explains all why Focus were such a successful and respected act.

The album is not easy to grasp by any stretch of the imagination, and patience is going to be required to truly appreciate it in its entirety.
This is one of those albums that have to be listened to countless times in order to understand what is going on, with each listen better than the last.
Although every song on the album is an achievement in itself, if I had to pick a handful of stand-out tracks, ‘The Eagle Nature’ and ‘Sentiment’ immediately spring to mind, while the instrumental ‘Textures’ has to be heard to be believed.

For an album that had SO much going on, it really sucked to have such a compressed sound with the instruments, vocals, and drums all meshed together.
At the time it was easily the most ambitious death metal album ever and helped pave the way for a new breed of death metal bands that were actually intelligent as well as incredibly brutal.
An oddity all its own, Cynic's unclassifiable Focus was unprecedented in 1993 and hasn't aged or faded at all in the decade-plus it's been around.

 FOCUS
At this early stage, the musical style of Focus had not yet completely crystallised, which is evidenced by this album.
Now Focus were on top, and in high demand in their home land, and abroad, as a hot live act.
This album also indicated the change of the group’s style towards a more funky end of the spectrum, and Akkerman, who had been rowing with Van Leer for quite some time about musical direction, openly distanced himself from the end-product.

Answers!" This album also showcases what is Focus’ most beautiful track “Love Remembered." This is undoubtedly one of the most essential releases of the golden age of progressive rock, and it shows Focus at the height of their creative powers.
While it is beyond question that Focus was, and still is, a progressive band, this release shows a more jazz influenced group.
It is certainly much more representative of Focus’ sound than their one other hit single, “Hocus Pocus." “Sylvia” is a very classy guitar led instrumental, and one of those rare numbers where every note of the guitar melody is instantly memorable and hummable.

While this fourth album would be the final KISS album satisfying the initial contract that had been signed in 1973, politics were starting to play a part of the band's existence, more so than usual now that everything connected with the band was in dire straits...
While the solo albums and ever growing merchandising machine drew attention away from the band as a unit, the truly "Dynasty" was the death knell for the band.

Most will agree that "Live at the Rainbow" and "Hamburger Concerto" (last good album) were their best, moving into a period of more pure classical and jazz influence.
"Focus 8" marks the return of Thjis Van LEER in the true nature of music: tuneful, memorable and a little bit rocky when they want to be.
Perhaps in summary, the band could have veered a little from the safety of the FOCUS blueprint but "Focus 9" may yet further develop their own voice.

Prior to the official release of the album, a limited run of 500 numbered copies were pressed in time for the band's performance at the Whitchurch Festival.
Originally sung by P.J. Proby on the Focus Con Proby album, the band has decided to give the song a second chance this time with the flute replacing the vocal passages (although live it is Thijs who sings the by now immortal lines!).
Maybe not all the material on Focus 8 is strong enough to be transferred onto disc straight away but that same enthusiasm simply drove these four people into the studio.

Focus were then at their peak of popularity, with their earlier album Moving Waves also being a top ten album, and Hocus Pocus taken from Moving Waves being a hit single.
Comment: Focus 3 was the groups loosest album by far, with two long semi-improvised centrepieces and a clutch of shorter tunes including Big Hit Sylvia, one of pops great melodies, with that famously lovely guitar line and rich Hammond backdrop.
Focus 3 is one of van Leers best creations as usual with his Focus titles a romantic theme for guitar and organ, it develops from moody introspection to relaxed delight with a beautiful melodic logic.

Cynic : Focus - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Their only official recording, 1993's ground breaking Focus, meshed metal and jazz on an unprecedented scale, and explored the creative possibilities of this strange musical hybrid to a degree which has yet to be equaled.
And yet, as suggested by its title, their stunning sonic collages were uncommonly focused and concise, avoiding the time transgressions of most progressive metal to achieve even greater impact.
Simply put, Focus remains a wholly original and widely respected release amongst the small progressive metal community, many of whom still regard it as the ultimate statement in the genre.

Focus was the four piece from Holland that can be credited with being one of the first bands to bring instrumental progressive rock to the AM airwaves with their 1971 hit "Hocus Pocus" (featured on Ship of Memories).
Stylistically, the music that is presented on the new Focus album, Focus 8, brings to the listener not only the familiar, distinctively original, and immediately recognizable spirit of this Legend, but also a decent dose of something new, which wasn't typical for a "classic" Focus.
The mainly digital soundscapes on this album are well constructed and of audiophile quality, though perhaps in some cases a bit too General MIDI tinny and obvious (then again, some of TD's early-80's sounds don't stand up any better today).

 CYNIC Focus reviews and MP3
This album has only a few small weaknesses--the sound quality is not what a bigger band would have, and I wish some of the songs were longer.
From tip to toe, the album shows the virtuosity of the players focusing in the structure of the song in question and in the whole album, the peak point is the instrumental TEXTURES, but all the record acts as a unity.
Focus is the result of many years of its artists evolution, from a rather technical death-metal to a fusion of many musical influences, with great enphasis on metal and progressive rock.

A Review by The Phantom Tollbooth
Track eleven, "Too Much Fun," begins in the same way, but soon changes focus, heading in the same direction as a lot of songs on this album do towards a hybrid Radiohead/Oasis sound instead of the Starflyer I am used to hearing.
In the end, while the album certainly isn’t terrible, not being a fan of either of the aforementioned bands, it did not hold the appeal for me that their older efforts do.
In spite of obviously and intentionally borrowing from some well-known songs and bands from the late '60s/early '70s, The Fashion Focus is by far one of the best albums to come out in recent years.

Before recording their first album in 1970, the band spent time practicing vigorously to work out their incredible progressive blend of rock, jazz, folk and blues.
All attempts to get a new contract fell through, the album was never released (it has actually just been released on CD in 2002) and slowly the band drifted apart.
One of the most incredible and perhaps the most complex album of the Krautrock genre, 'Four Letter Monday Afternoon' is quite possibly the strongest of all the Krautrock double-albums.

Focus / In and Out of Focus album review [plus 'Why Dream' song lyrics]
We all have the power to change the future, and it starts with dreaming about a world different—better—than the one we presently live in.
That was Focus's message in 1970 on "Why Dream." The rest of the album explores a variety of themes, some fanciful, some serious.
Overall, the album is nice melodic progressive rock throughout and is one of the group's best albums.

 Detailed Reviews [Focus - 2002 - "Focus 8"] - ProgressoR
This is the album's opener, Rock & Rio, which, at the same time, is much in the vein of Hocus Pocus from "Moving Waves" and, of course, includes inimitable joking vocalizes by maestro Van Leer and highly virtuosi (just brilliant!) arrangements that, moreover, are full of magic.
Here are the tracks, the contents of which completely conform to the predominant stylistics of the album, which is certainly Classic Art-Rock with elements of Prog-Metal and bits of Jazz-Fusion: Tamara's Move, Fretless Love, Hurkey Turkey, Sto Ces Raditi Ostatac Zivota, Neurotika, and Brother (2, 3, 4, 7, & 9).
Finally, all three of the following compositions: De Ti O De Mi, Focus 8, and Blizu Tebe (5, 6, & 10), sound like the classic Focus ballads (and these are the Classic Art-Rock ballads), though the second half of the album's title track is both slow and heavy.

Dre now expects the album to be completed by the end of 2003, not the summer of 2003 as had originally been expected.
Dre is also working on the upcoming debut album from 50 Cent which he says he will end up as a classic album in the same category as The Chronic, Illmatic, etc.
As for his own album, Detox, Dre told MTV "I'm gonna try to make this one the one they remember me for." The general feeling is that Dre will be making Detox a concept album of sorts.
