Focus (board game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Focus is an abstract strategy board game, designed by Sid Sackson and published in 1964 by Kosmos.
Focus won the 1981 Spiel des Jahres and Essen Feather awards.
The game appears in Sackson's A Gamut of Games in the section New Battles on an Old Battlefield.

Simulation & Computer Integration in Board Games
The focus of the game certainly isn't on the economics.
A board game is forced to use a more or less crude simplification of the economical model, while a computer game can provide a more realistic system.
The games that could benefit from this kind of computer integration tend to be on the heavier end of the scale and thus quite far from mainstream board games (I couldn't come up with any popular board games that would really benefit from computer integration).

Of Murkowski's game board choices, two are registered big-game guides from Fairbanks, one is an air boater, one is a subsistence hunter and trapper from the Bush, one is a retired state wildlife biologist featured in Alaska Department of Fish and Game hunting videos, and one is the former director of the state's game division.
Fleagle, who has served on the board of directors of Doyon Ltd. since 1996 and is president of the Native village of Manley Hot Springs, was not reappointed by Knowles.

Ancient Board Games and the Nabataeans
A game board similar to Mancala was found on the roof of the temple of Seti I in Egypt.
The game was played on a board of, naturally, 20 squares; the object being to get one's pieces on the board, then move in a diagonal pattern around and down the central row of squares, and finally off the far end.
This game is superior in complexity to English draughts (or checkers) by virtue of the fact that it is played on a board ten squares by ten squares.

 Board Game Sales
Electronic games, usually played by one person, were popular in the mid-'90s, experts say, but board games can be played by a group, making them more value-for-money.
But Hasbro cannot afford to be too complacent as it could face competition from new strategy board games like Settlers of Catan, where players strategize to expand their settlement through trade and war, and Amun-re, a similar game set in Egypt, that are being imported from Germany.
According to Herried, "the overall awareness of [non-standard] board games is on a sharp incline." Larry Roznai, president of Mayfair Games, publisher of the English version of Settlers of Catan, agrees that the industry is in growth mode.

 Lost Garden
Game design, in its most pure sense, is the creation of the rules that govern the gaming environment.  At the base of every finished game is a game design.
The core principles that drive a simple arcade game like Pac man should also be evident in a sophisticated tour de force like Deus Ex.  With this thought in mind, I analyzed the design process of a lowly board game.
What is an efficient process of rule creation?  What are the pitfalls of balancing a game and what are techniques that help avoid these pitfalls?  If my board game produces answers that parallel useful solutions for video games, then perhaps we have stumbled upon a set of universally helpful design tools.

Game Theory 101 - Part II
In games like this, players would often have no clue as to who is winning by just observing each other's actions because a good or bad move tends to be incremental.
An element of the game that helps to give it tension is the competition for choice spaces on the board.
It changed the game from being an incremental game of acquisition and development to a game that explodes when a player is able to trade for the right combination of properties.

 Focus
Focus (or Domination) is a Sid Sackson abstract strategy game for two to four in which players attempt to make moves and capture pieces in such a manner that their opponent(s) have no moves remaining.
Pieces of a player's own color that are taken by that player are reserved to re-enter the game at a later time; pieces of the opponent's color are kept as captured.
Reserved pieces can be entered on a turn in any space on the board in place of making a move of pieces; strategic use of reserved pieces can make the game by utilizing them to capture stacks controlled by opponent(s).

 GAME CLASSICS: FOCUS
The board of the game is actually a standard checkerboard of 8x8 dimensions with the nearest and farthest rows of squares on each side missing four or two squares (as seen on the box at left).
In the two player game, each player receives 18 checkers (red and green in the Western set) which are placed in alternating pairs to occupy the inside areas of the board.
Since the initial game set-up is symmetrical, if the second player imitates the moves of the first player, the game would end in a draw.
