foehn. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
A foehn originates as follows: Air is first forced upward over the windward mountain slopes, cooling as it encounters the lower pressures of higher altitudes.
The foehn occurs when the circulation is strong enough to force air over the mountains in a relatively short period of time.
The nature of the foehn in a particular locale depends on the topography, the strength and direction of circulation, and the moisture supply on the windward side of the mountains.

Foehn wind - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A foehn wind occurs when a deep layer of prevailing wind is forced over a mountain range.
As the wind descends to lower levels on the leeward side of the mountains, the air heats as it comes under greater atmospheric pressure creating strong, gusty, warm and dry winds.
The name "foehn" (or "föhn", pronounced as "fern") originated in the Alps.

This is especially true of the south foehn, which blows from northern Italy, where the air is warm, to the north of the Alps (Austria, Germany, Switzerland), where the air is cooler and could be cold arctic air as just described.
In other mountain ranges the foehn has a variety of local names, including chinook in the Rocky Mountains in North America; zonda for a westerly foehn from the Argentine Andes; ljuka in Carthinia (northwestern Croatia); halny wiatr in Poland; austru in Romania; and favogn in Switzerland.
In New Zealand a foehn blowing from the New Zealand Alps onto the Canterbury Plains is the Canterbury northwester.

Unexpected warming induced by foehn winds in the lee of the Smoky Mountains   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Foehn winds are commonly observed in the lee of large mountain ranges and are typically associated with dramatic temperature increases and relative humidity decreases due to adiabatic compression of the descending wind.
Foehn winds have been frequently documented near the mountains of the western United States, and include the Chinook winds near the Rocky Mountains (Oard 1993), the Santa Ana winds near the mountains of southern California (Burroughs 1987; Lessard 1988), and the Sundowner winds near the Santa Ynez Mountains (Blier 1998; Ryan and Burch 1992).
Foehn winds observed across the western United States can be quite strong and produce an abrupt increase in temperature and decrease in relative humidity as they descend (Blier 1998; Oard 1993; Nkemdirim 1986).

FOEHN - Cloud Structure In Satellite Images
Foehn is a special weather situation which appears on the lee side of a mountain chain in the situation where an air stream is crossing it perpendicularly.
Also, due to the rather rare nature of the foehn phenomenon, its contribution to the average distribution of cloudiness in the region is not apparent.
Another area where Foehn effects are frequently seen in satellite images is the Spanish N coast and the Pyrenean mountains.

Another cause for the drop of the ozone levels in the Milano area is the influence of north foehn, a regional wind of the Alps that may transport air from the Alpine crest down into the Po Basin.
During north foehn cases the ozone concentration in the area is substantially reduced to about 60 ppb.
This cleansing effect is evident in the region between the southern Alpine foothills and the urban area of Milano.

The foehn is an ill wind that blows, one of more than 30 "witches' winds" around the world that make people do strange things, such as beat their spouses and commit suicide.
But the foehn that whistles down the Swiss and Bavarian Alps is the grandmother wind; hence all such witches' winds are categorized as foehns (the Germans pronounce it almost like fern).
The foehn is nothing more than a warm, bone-dry airflow that comes down the mountainsides in the spring and fall.

 FOEHN - Meteorological Physical Background
The basic condition leading to a Foehn process is a flow perpendicular to a mountain range.
Regardless of the orientation of the mountain chain (W-E or N-S) an intensive low to the W, NW of this mountain chain is the basic synoptic-scale pre-condition for such a perpendicular stream.
Whether the Foehn-storm is noticed as far down as in the valleys on the lee side of the mountains also depends upon the structure of the local boundary layer.

Yes, maybe a classical foehn condition requires a venturi to be established (with the mountains providing one side) but in fact the problem in Austria this week has been quite simply "wind" (Foehn is in fact a complex meteorological phenomenon, of which wind is just one component).
Lenticulars are a poor indicator indeed of this wind; maybe only one in ten foehn conditions here produce them (you need the right amount of moisture in the air, to begin with).
Indeed, the foehn all this week here (I'm about 400km West of the Worlds location at Greifenburg and south of the Alps) has been gentle and given excellent flying conditions, south of the Alps.
