FöHN (WIND)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)

A föhn wind or foehn wind occurs when a deep layer of prevailing wind is forced over a mountain range.
As the wind descends to lower levels on the leeward side of the mountains, the air heats as it comes under greater atmospheric pressure creating strong, gusty, warm and dry winds.
Winds of this type are called "snow-eaters" for their ability to make snow vanish.

 Wind: Definition and links.
winds due to large pressure systems, which are in turn caused by sunlight heating the ground, and are affected by the rotation of the Earth.
Wind tends to hug the ground and travel in layers so when it hits a hill the layers bunch up resulting in high wind speeds at the top of the hill.
In the narrows of a canyon the layers of wind converge at the narrowest point of the canyon creating bolster eddies on either side of the start of the narrows and lee eddies on the opposite side.

FOHN - LoveToKnow Article on FOHN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
It is caused by the indraft of air from the elevated region to areas of low barometric pressure in the neighborhood, and the warmth and dryness are due to dynamical compression of the air as it descends to lower levels.
Similar local winds occur in many parts of the world, as Greenland, and on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
In the southern Alpine valleys the Fhn wind is often called sirocco, but its nature and cause are different from the true sirocco.

In general the wind speeds at sea level are not as great as on hilly sites but the additional effect of sea breezes could improve the amount of time a coastal wind farm could operate.
When computing the wind profile at sea and coastal sites the effect of heat fluxes and moisture fluxes can be significant even at high wind speeds and the equations detailed in section 1.3 should include stability corrections.
Fohn winds are found all over the world and can be strong and also can be dangerous as the temperature rise can lead to snow melt.

The appropriate wind direction was normally found first since the temperature difference in the foehn air could vary according to many factors including the air mass characteristics, height of the mountain, occurrence or absence of clouds, and soil conditions.
A total of two foehn wind events with significant temperature rises were found to have occurred between 1955 and 2001 in the Asheville region on the eastern side of the southern Appalachian Mountains: 2 December 1968 and 28 December 1992.
As seen with the foehn wind events on the western side, the surface dewpoint rises on the eastern side were also determined to be the result of a warmer and nearly saturated 850 hPa air mass.

A strong westerly wind meant a pronounced ‘fohn effect’ to the east of the hills.
A ‘fohn effect’ is when, as the wind pushes air up a significant slope or hill, the air condenses as it rises, and condenses to form rain.

The chinook is the warm dry wind at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains, and presents the same features as the fohn winds of Switzerland.
The chinook winds descend from the Rockies, and while they are chiefly found in Montana and Wyoming, they also extend from the southern part of Colorado up into Canada as far as the Arctic circle.
The high temperatures are confined to the valleys, and occur in streaks or pockets so that a traveller frequently passes suddenly from a very warm to a very cold atmosphere.

The 'Föhn effect' is a German term given to a wind local to the Alps.
The name comes from a German term given to a wind local to the Alps, which is most noticeable in late winter and spring.
Unfortunately the spring-like conditions experienced in Aboyne did not last for long: at midday on the 30th the air temperature was -2°C (28°F), and with a 20 knot (23 mph) wind, there was a wind chill equivalent temperature of -12°C (10°F).

They most commonly occur with föhn winds, which in the South Island are associated with the passage of a deep depression across the South Tasman Sea, preceded by very strong north-westerly winds.
This particular cloud was caused by the high north-westerly wind impinging on the westerly side of the Rock and Pillar range (in background) being deflected upward and over the high peaks.
At the same time, the wind would be increased in velocity over the top of the peaks and would descend on the leeward side, before again carrying out a reflected upward movement.
