Foil bearing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Foil bearings require no pressure system for the working fluid, the hydrodynamic bearing is self starting.
Foil bearings were introduced commercially in 1969 by Garrett Systems AiResearch on the DC-10's ventilation equipment.
The main advantage of foil bearings is the elimination of the oil systems required by traditional bearing designs.

Foil bearing surfaces and method of making same - Patent 4654939
Such foils, which are generally thin sheets of a compliant material, are deflected by the hydrodynamic film forces between adjacent bearing surfaces and the foils thus enhance the hydrodynamic characteristics of the fluid bearings and also provide improved operation under extreme load conditions when normal bearing failure might otherwise occur.
This may be between the foils and a shaft or bushing or in the case of thrust bearings, with respect to a thrust plate or runner.
Foil bearing surfaces are formed with reservoirs of dry lubricant dispersed on the contact surfaces thereof in a patterned matrix such that any rubbing between surfaces will be across a number of these reservoirs.

Variable preload foil bearing - Patent 4445792
In a hydrodynamic foil bearing of the type having an axial shaft rotatably supported with respect to a housing by a plurality of cantilevered foils bearing against the shaft surface, means for adjustably mounting the foils with respect to the housing to vary the preload of the foils against the shaft surface, comprising,
Typically, in a hydrodynamic bearing, a shaft rotatably contained within a housing is surrounded by a series of foils cantilevered from the housing which wrap the shaft in a series of line contacts parallel to the axis of the shaft under a predetermined preload or tension.
Thus, the preload of the foils and the bearing stiffness may be increased at startup, lifting the shaft away from the housing, and decreasing the eccentricity.

The bearing surface is in contact with the shaft only when the machine starts and stops, and a coating on the foils limits wear at those times.
In a journal bearing the shaft deflects and a wedge is formed due to the eccentricity between the shaft center and the bearing center.
The foil face touching the shaft is coated for lubricity during startup and shutdown.

Drainage foil element having two wire bearing portions - Patent 4123322
A drainage foil according to claim 1 wherein said drainage means comprises means defining a slot between said suction-creating portion and said second bearing portion, and beneath said slot, apertured means for holding said second bearing portion in a fixed position trailing said suction-creating portion.
Foils currently in use have a sharp front edge, a flat leading or "land" surface for supporting or bearing the forming wire and a diverging trailing surface with divergence angle between 0.degree.
The effective foil angle between the wire and the drainage surface is thus maintained more nearly constant during use of the foil and, in turn, this assures a greater degree of stability of the dewatering function in a paper making or other web-forming process.

 NASA - NASA FactSheet
Foil air bearings are self-acting hydrodynamic bearings that use ambient air as the lubricant instead of oil.
For a foil air bearing, the maximum load capacity is dependent on the design of the top and bump foils, diameter, and length and speed of the rotating shaft.
Foil bearings do not have this limitation as there are no rotating parts of the bearing except the shaft.

An Experimental Investigation into the Temperature Profile of a Compliant Foil Air Bearing - Storming Media
The temperature profile was collected by instrumenting a foil bearing with nine, type K thermocouples arranged in the center and along the bearing's edges in order to measure local temperatures and estimate thermal gradients in the axial and circumferential directions.
The mating journal was coated with a high temperature solid lubricant that, together with the bearing, underwent high temperature start-stop cycles to produce a smooth, steady-state mn-in surface.
Surprisingly, the maximum temperatures did not occur at the bearing edge where the minimum film thickness is expected but rather in the middle of the bearing where analytical investigations have predicted the air film to be much thicker.

Two foil coating materials, a conventional soft polymer film (polyimide) and a hard ceramic (alumina), were independently evaluated against as-ground and worn (run-in) journals coated with NASA PS304, a high-temperature solid lubricant composite coating.
The foil coatings were evaluated at journal rotational speeds of 30000 rpm and at 25 deg C. Tests were also performed on a foil bearing with a bare (uncoated) nickel-based superalloy top foil to establish a baseline for comparison.
The test results indicate that the presence of a top foil solid lubricant coating is effective at increasing the load capacity performance of the foil bearing.

This thesis deals with the development of mathematical models and numerical schemes for simulating the hydrodynamic pressure and temperature rise of compliant foil bearings lubricated by a thin gas film in between its compliant bearing surface and the rotating shaft.
The model accounts for the compressibility of gas, the compliance of the bearing surface, and the interaction between the pressure field and temperature field of the gas film in the bearing system.
A series of parametric study is presented to illustrate the utility of the developed algorithms for characterization of foil bearing performance and guidance of foil bearing design.
