Fokker EIII Eindecker German WWI Scout- history about Max Immelman.
Fokker senior's doubts were confounded in the early war years when '33 his son not only repaid every penny with interest, but declined his patrimony; whatever he might need thereafter, it would never again be money from his father.
Fokker had never even handled a gun before, but he knew at once that deflector plates on the propeller were a poor solution to the problem.
Fokker, still only twenty-eight, had also built up a cash fortune of some 30,000,000 marks (about $7,000,000), and he was able to smuggle out most of this by converting it to foreign currency and packing it in old suitcases or aboard his yacht.

First World War.com - The War in the Air - Fighters: The Fokker Scourge
In April of 1916 a captured Eindecker was tested by the Allies, and found to be inferior in performance to its Morane-Saulnier opposite number.
The Eindecker, ironically, was unseated by aircraft already available before Fokker’s invention of the interrupter gear, and none of them ever had interrupter gear installed.
If the Fokker Scourge was symbolically opened by Boelcke’s first victory, it was symbolically closed when Max Immelmann was killed during a fight with an FE2b on June 18th 1916.

Anthony Fokker (1890-1939) was approached by the German authorities to produce a similar arrangement for a German aircraft.
Fokker and Heinrich Luebbe produced a mechanical synchronizing gear that timed the bullets to shoot through the propeller arc between the turning blades by July of 1915.
This was then mounted on a Fokker M.5K monoplane, which became an M.5K/MG (MG meant Machinengewehr or machine-gun), later known as the Fokker "Eindecker" (meaning "one wing") or E.I. This aircraft was the first true operational fighter aircraft of the war.

 Air Power:Fokker and His Aircraft
Anthony Herman Gerard Fokker (1890-1939) designed Germany’s most successful combat airplanes in World War I. Fokker was born in the Netherlands, but upon completing his general education, moved to Germany to pursue a technical education.
Fokker foresaw the Allies’ demand that the Fokker factories be destroyed and fled to the Netherlands at the end of the war, where he reestablished his company with hundreds of smuggled planes and engines.
Fokker is remembered for inventing the most dangerous early warplanes as well as the most reliable passenger airplanes.

Fokker's "Eindecker" was not only the first monoplane fighter in WWI, but it was also the first to be able to fire a forward facing machinegun through the propeller without having the bullets hit it.
The Eindecker was a direct copy of the Morane-Saulnier "Parasol" except for the characteristic Fokker tail plane and the synchronized machine gun.
The "eindecker" was typically armed with a single LMG 08/15 7.92 mm machine gun firing through the propeller using a synchonizing gear.

The Fokker E.3, sometimes referred to as the Eindecker (“one wing”), deserves a significant place in aviation history.
Not necessarily because of its aerial prowess, but because it was the first combat aircraft in the world to be equipped with a forward-firing, fixed machine gun synchronized to fire between the propeller blades.
The “Eindecker” was typically armed with a single LMG 08/15 7.92 mm machine gun firing through the propeller using a synchronizing gear.

 Fokker Eindecker Information
Developed in April 1915, the Eindecker ("Monoplane") was the first purpose-built German fighter aircraft and the first aircraft to be fitted with synchronizer gear, enabling the pilot to fire a machine gun through the arc of the propeller without striking the blades.
The Eindecker granted the German air force, or "Luftstreitkrafte," almost complete supremacy from July 1915 until early 1916; a period known as the Fokker Scourge during which Allied aviators regarded themselves as "Fokker Fodder".
All Eindeckers used a gravity fuel tank which had to be constantly filled by hand-pumping from the main fuel tank behind the pilot; this task had to be performed up to eight times an hour.

Fokker E series Eindecker model airplane
The Fokker E series, Eindecker (monoplane), is significant as it was the first plane to have synchronized machine-gun firing through the propeller, which made it a tremendously successful fighter.
It resulted in Fokker being approached to develop a more sophisticated means of arriving at the same result, leading to the interrupter gear that "timed" the bullets to pass harmlessly between the spinning propeller blades.
It was these early Fokker E-types that brought the so-called "Fokker Scourge" when, from the autumn of 1915 to the spring of 1916, they played havoc with the B. 2c units of the Royal Flying Corps.

Fokker Eindecker - only monowing airplane of world war 2
Fokker's "Eindecker" was the first monoplane fighter in WWI, but it was also the first to be able to fire a forward facing machinegun through the propeller without having the bullets hit it.
This synchronized firing mechanism was a major step forward in aerial combat, as it avoided damaging or stressing the propeller and allowed the pilot to fire the gun at an opponent simply by pointing his aircraft at it.
The aircraft was used in large part to prohibit Allied access to German airspace, as the pilots were instructed not to dogfight over Allied territory for fear of having the synchronizing gear fall into enemy hands.

Fokker production figures state that 249 E.IIIs were manufactured however a number of the 49 E.IIs were upgraded to E.III standard when they were returned to Fokker's Schwerin factory for repairs.

The plane was highly maneuverable and easily outperformed the Fokker Eindecker; within a few weeks of its debut, German high command ordered its engineers to copy the plane.
These characteristics, along with the fact that Fokker had designed the plane without relying on the standard wing-bracing wires that were easily shot apart during combat, made it a superb dogfighter.

The Eindecker needed no trimming between full throttle and power off; so setting up for a touch-and-go landing was really just a matter of throttling back and guiding the airplane to the touchdown point.
Likewise, the Eindecker has no tendency to slew to the left on throttle application, so get- ting back off the ground is very smooth and easy.

No sooner had the war in the air become more serious, more deadly, in early 1915, than both Allied and German airmen were trying to find a successful way of fighting each other in order for each side to stop the other making reconnaissance and artillery observation sorties over the opposition's side of the lines.
Various ingenious schemes, which had limited success, were suddenly overshadowed by the arrival at the front in the summer of 1915 of the Fokker Eindecker, which had a synchronized machine gun firing through the whirling blades of the propeller.
None of the early Fokker aces survived the war, bar one, and he died soon afterwards still serving his country.

Airplane design improved so rapidly during the war that the Eindecker was quickly outclassed in both speed and firepower and soon the few remaining ones were relegated to use as trainers.

 HR Models 1/48 Fokker Eindeckers
The Fokker Eindecker was the first 'modern' fighter aircraft; ie: one in which it was armed with a forward firing machine gun, however it was as an unarmed scout that the design first made its name.
These early Eindeckers were meant to be flown as single seaters, but the cockpit was of sufficient length that a second seat was occasioinally added to the rear of the pilot.
Once the synchronized gun was developed, the Eindecker was one of the first aircraft to be so equipped, with the E.I being basically an armed M.5K with the only external differences being a shortened cockpit opening and a revised shape to the flank panels behind the cowl.
