In December, 1939, Anthony Fokker died in the United States, where the American branch of his company was very successful.
In 1958, the Fokker F-27 "Friendship" was introduced, which became the world's best selling turboprop airliner (selling almost 800 from 1958 to 1986).
In 1996 the Fokker company was declared bankrupt, but some parts of the company survived.

The nose and midsection of the fuselage were built by VFW, while MBB contributed the aft section.
Responsibility for the wings and engine pylons was assigned to Fokker, while SABCA was responsible for the landing flaps and Fairey of Belgium for the spoilers and ailerons.
Nevertheless the VFW 614 inaugurated a new era in the post-war development of aircraft construction in Germany and was to prove the basis for German participation in the Airbus programme.

The Fokker F28 Fellowship is a short range jet airliner designed and built by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker.
Announced by Fokker in April 1962, production was a collaboration between a number of European companies namely Fokker, MBB of Germany, Fokker-VFW of Germany and Short Brothers of United Kingdom.
There was also government money invested in the project, with the Dutch government providing 50% of Fokker's stake and the German government had 60% of the 35% German stake.

Studies for the VFW 614 began in 1961, when Weser Flugzeugbau in Bremen and Hamburger Flugzeugbau pooled their engineering resources for the development of a 36-seat airliner, first labelled ERNO 61-4 (Entwicklungsring Nord).
Most of the VFW 614 in civil service were quickly retired, and during the last years the major user was the Flugbereitschaft der Luftwaffe at Cologne/Bonn airport.
The final two VFW 614s still in use are now stationed with DLR in Braunschweig and Daimler-Benz Aerospace at Bremen for research duties.
