FLUG REVUE Datafiles: VFW-Fokker VFW 614
Studies for the VFW 614 began in 1961, when Weser Flugzeugbau in Bremen and Hamburger Flugzeugbau pooled their engineering resources for the development of a 36-seat airliner, first labelled ERNO 61-4 (Entwicklungsring Nord).
German LBA certification for the VFW 614 was gained on 23 August 1974, followed by FAA approval on 4.
Most of the VFW 614 in civil service were quickly retired, and during the last years the major user was the Flugbereitschaft der Luftwaffe at Cologne/Bonn airport.

The VFW 614 was powered by two 7,280 lb RR/Snecma M45H Mk 501 turbofans that gave it a maximum speed of 457 mph at 21,000ft and a maximum cruise of 449 mph at 25,000ft.
The VFW 614 had a span of 70ft 6.5 in, length of 67ft 7in and a wing area of 688.89 sq ft.

Two alternative arrangements suggest themselves: (1) a high wing location with engines mounted beneath the wing or (2) a low wing configuration in which the engines are mounted on top of the wing.
So far, neither of these arrangements has been utilized on a business jet, although one small transport aircraft (the VFW Fokker 614) has been produced that employs the over-wing-engine arrangement.
In most cases, the aft-engine arrangement used on business jets forces the horizontal tail to the tip or part way up the vertical tail.
