 Simply Hydroponics - Foliar Feeding
Foliar feeding, provides nutrients through the foliage of the plant which has the ability to absorb and translocate certain minerals within plant tissues and this is a technique which growers can use in many situations.
Spraying early in the morning, while it is light, but temperatures are still cool, or in the evening is best and conditions that allow the leaf to dry rather than stay wet for an extended length of time is also important to consider.
Foliar feeding can by carried out on a regular, weekly basis, or can be limited to the times when the crop comes under high nutrient demand such as early fruit set and heavy fruit loading.

Foliar feeding may be used as often as twice a week for a period, and then plants may be misted with plain, hot water.

Foliar spraying is a popular application method used with herbicides in a water carrier from spring leaf development through to plant senescence in the fall.
Successful foliar spraying depends on thoroughly wetting all leaf and green stem tissue using a herbicide effective during that part of the growing season.
Spray units mounted on all-terrain vehicles (Figure 2) permit foliar treatment of rose growing on steeper terrain.

It has been suggested that Foliar feeding be merged into this article or section.
Foliar spraying is the process of spraying (using a spray gun attached to a tank) a liquid (such as a herbicide or fertilizer) onto the leaves of plants (such as grasses, trees, shrubs, or flowers).
Foliar is Latin, meaning "of or relating to a leaf or leaves", as in "foliage".

Foliar feeding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Foliar Feeding is a relatively new, slightly controversial technique of feeding plants by applying liquid fertiliser directly to their leaves.
While the conventional wisdom is "don't even spray your tomato plants, only water them by soaking the ground beneath", modern gardening techniques strongly recommend spraying the leaves of a tomato plant with fertiliser, as part of the normal fertilisation routine.
Foliar feeding is considered especially useful for introducing trace elements, or for "emergency" feeding of plants which are found to have a specific shortage.

However, most plants sprayed with these deformation-inducing compounds remained alive; in a visual assessment rating total injury from 0 (normal) to 10 (killed), the grading of plants treated with the higher dose of difenzoquat and trifluralin was 7, 6 for napropamide; and 5 to 4 for the other herbicides of this group.
The observed foliar effects are due, in some cases, to direct foliar absorption, or are caused by root uptake and upward translocation.

 Foliar Fertilization
Foliar fertilization (or foliar feeding) entails the application—via spraying—of nutrients to plant leaves and stems and their absorption at those sites.
Foliar applications are often timed to coincide with specific vegetative or fruiting stages of growth, and the fertilizer formula is adjusted accordingly.
At present, for example, foliar sprays are commonly recommended to correct zinc deficiencies in grapes (2), to control bitter pit and cork spot in apples (3), and for general supplementary nutrition in strawberries.

Foliar growth promoting mixture - Patent 4383845
In overall concept, the subject foliar growth promoting mixture develops a system that is used primarily as a foliar spray and delivers both the major and minor nutrients in solution to be absorbed through the leaves and stems of the plant in order to promote efficient growth of the plant.
The foliar mixture as herein described provides for an improved foliar spraying system which may be produced in a commercially viable manner to present plants with absorbable nutrients through the leaves, thus bypassing insertion into the soil of the nutrients.
Additionally, foliar spraying may act as a tonic to allow plants to increase their intake of nutrients from the soil than they would otherwise do if the foliar spraying were not provided.

Foliar acting herbicides such as glyphosate, 2,4-D or cycloxydim, require the weed leaves to be green at the time of spraying, as only green leaves will absorb the spray and move it to the roots.
Spraying herbicides in frosty conditions and snow should be avoided because of the dangers of wash off or lateral displacement should there be a rapid temperature change leading to rainfall.
Foliar herbicides need at least two hours free from rainfall to prevent them from being washed from the leaves, with some glyphosate formulations needing up to 24 hours to avoid this possibility.

Try also to coat both the upper and lower leaf surfaces where practical, as often the spray stays wet on the leaf longer, and there are more stomata to facilitate absorption on the lower leaf surfaces of many plant varieties.

There are, however, a number of concerns about the impact of foliar spraying, most notably due to detrimental effects on surrounding vegetation, particularly in gardens with rare and expensive plants and on sites of high nature conservation value.
Foliar spraying also requires two visits to the site (as two herbicide applications are necessary), it can rapidly denude steep banks of vegetation thus causing instability and erosion, and can worry local people.
Although this meant stronger concentrations than foliar spraying, because less than 10 ml was injected into each stem and a very targeted application was made, the effect was less herbicide used than the foliar spray method to treat an equivalent area.

For foliar spraying the herbicide is mixed with water and a small amount of non-ionic surfactant that helps the spray to cover and penetrate the leaves.
Foliar spraying is the best method to use as long as the trees are within reach of the spray, and should be used for control of any sprouts or suckers that may arise after other treatments.
Usually, the herbicide is mixed with fuel oil, kerosene, or mineral oil and sprayed onto the lower 12-18 inches of the trunk on all sides, but not to the point of runoff (low-volume basal).
