Calcio Storico - Costumed Football, Florence, Italy(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Calcio Storico can be traced back as far as February 17, 1530, although different accounts have it dating back even further.
At that time Florence had been over-run by the imperial troops of Charles V and at Florence's Piazza Santa Croce a match was played between the Bianchi and the Verdi as an outward sign of contempt and provocation.
In 1930 Calcio Storico was re-introduced to the Florentine calendar and today three games a year are held in late June and early July to coincide with the celebration of St. John's Day (the Patron Saint of Florence).
Nevertheless, amid the many events that unfolded along today's gently, rolling terrain through the provinces of Perugia, Terni, Rieti and Rome, one exploit that almanacs may never detail but will remain a sight to behold was Fortunato Baliano's long, romantic escape.
Riding solo for 70km on home ground (he hails from Foligno), he fancied his chances of going for it to add to his only professional win (not exactly a high-profile triumph at the 2nd stage of the Vuelta Condinamarca in Columbia in 2002).
Baliani ground out a lead that stretched to 5 minutes over the main group, at which time another aspiring solo hero, Marco Fertonani, went on the attack.

Cagliari: 'Sagra di Sant'Efisio', one of the biggest and most colourful processions in the world (May 1).
Florence: 'Scoppio del Carro', Explosion of the Cart in the Cathedral Square (Easter Sunday); and 'Gioco del Calcio', 16th-century football match in medieval costumes (June).
Foligno: 'Giostra della uintana' 17th-century joust with 600 knights in costumes (second Sunday in September).
This extraordinary festival commemorates a miracle said to have happened in 1264, when a wandering priest from Prague on a pilgrimage to Rome stopped at a local church in nearby Bolsena, outside Santa Christina, to celebrate the Eucharist.
Foligno hosts a colorful joust where ten knights, one from each of the ten districts of the city, compete in a contest of skill and dexterity.
Their challenge, in three rounds, is to charge towards a puppet representing a medieval soldier and stick their lances through an increasingly small ring hanging from its right hand.

Many have been crucial to their town’s image for centuries — the most celebrated of these being the Siena Palio, a hell-for-leather horse race round the central square.
The frenzy of Gubbio’s semi-pagan Corsa dei Ceri almost matches it, as does the passionate commitment of Florence’s Calcio Storico, a football match in medieval attire with no holds barred.
Costumed jousts and other martial displays are a feature of several festive calendars, notable examples being the jousts in Pistoia and Arezzo, and the twice-yearly crossbow competitions between Gubbio and Sansepolcro.
