Folk music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yet in nations or regions where folk music is a badge of cultural or national identity, the loss of folk music can be slowed; this is held to be true, for instance in the case of Hungary, Ireland, Brittany, and Galicia, all of which retain their traditional music to some degree.
Folk music is easily identified with the ordinary working people who created it, and preserving treasured things against the claimed relentless encroachments of capitalism is likewise a goal of many politically progressive people.
Folk music is still extremely popular among some audiences today, with folk music clubs meeting to share traditional-style songs, and there are major folk music festivals in many countries, eg the Port Fairy Folk Festival is a major annual event in Australia attracting top international folk performers as well as many local artists.

Other fusions of folk and rock include New Flamenco (Spain), the pop-oriented forms of North African raï music, and in the music of The Pogues and the Dropkick Murphys, both of whom draw on traditional Irish music and punk rock.
The Canadian band Celtae are unique in Celtic Folk Rock because they fuse two folk traditions, that of Cape Breton and Newfoundland with a broad definition of rock that includes elements of hard rock, funk, and jazz while retaining the original flavour of the traditional music.

 Psychedelic folk index page
There has been a time when the term Acid Folk was used for some folk-rock groups who were somewhat reinventing the traditional tunes, but I think this isn't the case any more nowadays.
The intention in "Acid Folk" was not to sound deliberately psychedelic, but the content of it is as expressive as this, or can still be mindexpanding in some way or another.
It can be acid folk music with "musical" opening, purity, honesty, etc. without that it necessarilly has to be psychedelic or completely free.

The term "folk" is used pretty loosely in today's musical lexicon, but it's worth remembering what it's supposed to mean.
Traditional folk music is a culturally specific, regional music made by the "folk," for the "folk," using acoustic (usually stringed) instrumentation; in short an inherently populist medium, often with quite specific political agendas, that deals with identity and history through storytelling.
These artists radically expanded America's conception of what "folk music" meant, proving both that folk was a commercially viable musical form and that musicians from outside folk culture could perform folk music.

First published in 1959 as The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, this ground-breaking collection reclaimed traditional song from the school and the recital room, and from the 'evening dress' into which it had so often been put during the first half of the twentieth century.
Drawing on material collected mainly in the early years of that century and originally published in The Journal of the Folk Song Society and its successor, The Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, the editors compiled a selection that revealed the vitality and beauty of English folk song in its natural form.
The book was enormously influential in the folk song revival and was regularly reprinted over some thirty years.
