  Folk metal - Nightwish.com Forum
Hm, the band that comes closest to folk metal and that I listen to are probably Gåte, but even though they are currently listed among the folk metal bands on wikipedia, they aren´t metal, just folk rock (maybe parts of some of their songs border metal).
Not sure if they should be defined as folk metal or viking metal but whatever they are, they're quite good.
I prefer folk metal the most, so I like many bands, but these three are the most favorite ones (at least right now).

Chain of Dogs have a go at the underbelly of folk music to get to its guts, and serve them to you in a bloody mix with thrash metal and horror punk.
Founded in 2005 they merge folk, thrash metal, fl metal and punk into brutal and fast folk metal; in your face lyrics about manslaughter, werewolves in the city and being proud of Limburg: her coal miner heritage, her towns, her hills, and her language.

Folk metal bands often have no commercial success in the country of their origin, whilst at the same time being considered a huge band commercially in other countries.
Folk Metal has also gained popularity in South East Asia and South Asia through the advent of a new sub-genre called Vedic metal which is based on Hinduism's holy scriptures and the Vedic philosophy.

The Metal Crypt - Descriptions of genres of metal
Progressive Metal: Progressive Metal is properly a mix of the progressive art rock of the 70's such as Yes, Rush and King Crimson with the basic sound of melodic Traditional Metal to produce more musically challenging and intricate sounds.
Gothic Metal, as it is meant today, is usually a mixing of Death Metal riffing with moody keyboards and female vocals, sometimes mixed with aggressive growling from a male vocalist, sometimes not.
Folk Metal: Essentially, any band that uses folk music in their songwriting is a Folk Metal band, but there is a wide array of bands under this rubric, and this makes classification difficult.

Primordial are Ireland’s biggest Metal band in terms of sales and international profile, yet they’d be lucky to sell much more than 500 copies of their albums in their own country or pull more than 300 punters to a gig.
Skyclad were the original Folk Metal band I suppose and they certainly influenced both Waylander and Cruachan, but coming from Ireland I’m sure both Keith [Cruachan] and myself thought we had a divine right to play Folk Metal, especially as we’re both influenced by the Horslips as well.
To me, the Folk Metal scene at the minute is the most interesting with such diversity in sound and approach that it is truly a breath of fresh air in a stale Metal scene.

 Death Folk
At the moment I call this style "death folk," a name I made up on the analogy of how "death metal" was formed from metal, and is similarly meant to connote a certain extremeness.
FOLK and FOLK ROCK: "Folk" can mean to two types of music, on one hand traditional music in general, on the other a style of popular music (including folk rock) to emerge from American traditional music.
I'm inspired by the general uniformity and congruence of metal music with band, album, and song names, logos, album art, and in general the image projected by bands, which all serve to support the ideas and mood of the music.

The folk elements are littered randomly around the album as the material generally switches from Maiden-ish/thrash jaunts to badly implemented folk interludes to carry the concept of the album.
Each of the folk metal clichés is rampantly enforced; battle scene sample from Braveheart (“Dissention Seeds”), acoustic, foresty ballads (“Morning Grief”, the atrocious “The Arrival”), ‘rousing’ war hymns (“The Silver Arm”, “Balor of the Evil Eye”), epic climax (“End Domain”) and the synth laden end note (“Homeland”).
The folk elements are so forced and piecemeal that Airged L’amh may have been better served just to have been a straight up thrash/power metal act rather than attempt to force synths and various woodwinds into their standard power metal canter.

Whereas prog metal simply attempts more difficult arrangements, the avant garde throws out the rule book altogether and approaches composition with a fresh, or inventive outlook- complexity isn't an issue, but wild creativity is. Avant garde metal tends to be theatrical and melodramatic, attempting an infusion of art music, impressionistic and disjointed arrangements, and metal.
Most doom metal makes use of death and fl metal vocals, but clean male and female voices are often employed to enhance the sullen atmosphere and dark mood of the music.
The forebearer of death and fl metal, thrash brought a higher level of intensity into metal, primarily by combining the intensity and tempos of early hardcore punk with the rigidity and dexterity of heavy metal.

Playing Celtic-style folk metal with a strong focus on Scottish history may seem like an odd choice for a band several thousand miles on the other side of the globe, but what really matters is the quality of the songs, and Skiltron sure as hell deliver.
Of course the folk elements extend beyond the use of whistles and bagpipes as cosmetic appliances, with the uplifting melodies and jerky, danceable rhythms and rousing choruses one would expect from the genre all present and correct.
The guitar has a lovely thick tone to it reminiscent of early German speed metal outfits, but also of the more recent movement of power metal bands that have gone back to having a little crunch in their riffs as answer to the expansive symphonic trend of the early 21st century.

 Enslaved - Viking Black Metal
Neoclassical and Norwegian folk influences are integrated entirely in the vision of melody as nihilistic and immanent through dynamic structural principles in tonally congruent phrasing within arrangements that are less rock than epic open Eurometal jam sessions with the precise structure and intelligence of a majestically esoteric lyric poem.
Previous creators of ambient folk metal masterpieces, Enslaved use the presentation dynamics of folk music to break fl metal into its simplest form of vector expression yet, a blasting counterpoint style based on melodic affinity to central lyric (as many folk songs do).
Whether that is your taste in fl metal or not, "Frost" bears study as a musical document of a potent direction for future technical underground minimalism, especially in its expression of Viking traditionalism through melody adapted to the manic patternings of modern rhythm.

Combining folk with metal is nothing new, as group's like Skyclad and recently Finntroll have brought lots of new sounds and styles to the metal genre, but none have quite the impact as Korpoklaani, who use violin, accordion, woodwinds, and traditional Finnish instruments alongside the normal guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards.
Metal is quite popular in Finland and some of those bands have also been accepted by the wider audience and they have became sort of mainstream.
Apart from the strong metal scene there is a large number of those smaller sub cultures with their own music.
