 MYTH
Myth is an expression of the sacred in words: it reports realities and events from the origin of the world that remain valid for the basis and purpose of all there is. Consequently, a myth functions as a model for human activity, society, wisdom, and knowledge.
For example, myths told and acted out in ritual reinforce the value that humans are at the center of an orderly, created world, or the value that despite being a unified whole society is a complex hierarchy and all of its members have their own particular duties and responsibilities.
Myths thus are utterly mundane and assigning them an “extraordinary” status as a precondition for studying them rightly is to begin our study with a mistake that deflects us from a more interesting and productive scholarly aim: undertaking the difficult study of the mechanisms whereby societies create the extraordinary from the everyday.

Myths, properly understood, are sacred narratives; they are a culture’s most significant tales, generally held to be sacred and true.
Myth attempts to make comprehensible the great occurrences and forces of nature that people have always marveled at, events like the creation of the Earth, the Great Flood, the cycle of the seasons.
Ghost stories, unlike myths, ignore the cosmic questions, the inclusive explanations, and the execution of great tasks; instead they concentrate on one revenant, a “returner” from the grave, who returns to set right an old wrong, sometimes with malicious intent, most often for revenge.
