Folk punk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Folk punk, in its most general sense, is a genre (or set of genres) of music that combine elements of folk and punk rock music.
Folk punk embraces a legacy of traditional folk music, typified by themes of working class solidarity and resistance in the face of the perceived problems of industrialization and modern capitalism.
Most famous amongst the public is the Pogues who formed in the first wave of punk rock in the late 1970s and found immense popularity in the punk community with their mix of traditional folk songs, modern social commentary and boozy hedonism.

Her voice is sweet, reminiscent of Joan Baez, decidedly more folk than punk, and the group gathered outside -- parents, children and singles alike -- sways and nearly breaks into song.

Phranc's folk/punk has perspective - The Boston Globe
It was comforting that a pioneering gay elder with a spiky flattop, combat boots, and cuffed Levis could inspire straight lovebirds, hipsters, and aging feminists alike with playful odes to her partner, biting social commentary, and a eulogy for a dead rodeo parakeet named Ouija.
It seems apparent that newer lesbian punk eruptions including the Queercore Blitz East, a tour including the Kitty Kill; '90s riot grrl outfits such as Bikini Kill and Team Dresch; and even the pansexual struts of electro ice queen Peaches can be traced in part back to Phranc.
The longstanding, self-proclaimed "All-American Jewish lesbian folk singer" has been performing since the late '70s, getting her start amid the trash and junkies haunting the LA punk scene as guitarist for the nasty iconoclasts Catholic Discipline.

Ska punk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ska and punk rock were first combined during the 2 Tone movement of the late 1970s, with bands such as The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, The Clash, The Ruts, and The Slits.
Ska punk fans are sometimes dubbed rude boys or rude girls, although they rarely resemble the original rude boys of 1960s Jamaica.
This is particularly evident at ska punk concerts, where one can see people not only dressed in traditional rudie or punk fashions, but also fans sporting clothes associated with other genres, such as pop punk and skate punk.

With the rise of hip hop and punk as outlets for venting revolutionary opposition to government repression, the uninformed groupthink right-wing's purges of any progressive-populist/anti-government sentiments from country music, and the general yuppifcation of properly termed folk music on the whole, the saliency of political folk has certainly withered significantly over time.

In the early days of punk rock, such musical virtuosity was often looked on with suspicion - complicated guitar solos were considered self-indulgent and unnecessary, although simple guitar breaks were still common, even in early punk songs.

The new release by The Kissers from Madison, Wisconsin, far-removed from the birthplace of Irish folk rock only by time and space, will nevertheless transport you to when The Pogues rocked the new wave scene in the 1980s.
This CD, a provocative mix of electric and acoustic, fast-paced rhythms and authentic Irish folk ballads, is full of anger and fight (as the title suggests) but it is also beautifully written, touching, and poetic.
It is a tag team of anarchistic punk, Australian folk, political core metal, and left-wing political propaganda.

One of these assumptions is that folk music generally involves guitars or other stringed or portable instruments.
One can be called a ‘freak folk’ artist, for instance, if one plays the harp, but there’s not enough novelty for a pianist to warrant this currently fashionable designation.

I am, as should be obvious, a fan of this sort of thing.
I'm a sucker for a fiddle-and-guitars sound, me. But I have a yardstick I use when watching this sort of band - the number of songs like The Wild Rover, or Finnegan's Wake or any other traditional folk songs that they play is inversely proportional to the quality of the band.
I don't think it's a co-incidence that if you're trying to get adults to look at comics, you give them things like TRANSMETROPOLITAN, or PREACHER rather than ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN - solid original material, rather than a cover version, however good the cover may be.
