 Motifs and Tale Types
Folk tales are made to be heard, not read, but when you tell a tale, you co-create it each time - that is, you follow a formula but provide your own details or embellishments.
Knowledge of motifs can be very important as a practical matter in the study of folk tales, since it allows one to identify similarities based on distinctive events, characters, and situations.
A particular cluster of motifs that hangs together through several individual tales and across various cultures is called a “tale type.” The Finnish folklorist Antti Aarne first attempted a classification of folk tales by type, using such patterns of connected motifs.

 Defining the Fairy Tale
The traditional association with the "folk" - if by "folk" one means the peasants and other poor, which often appears to be the sense of references to this group - is also suspect, since many of the best-known fairy tale collectors drew from middle-class or aristocratic tellers, rather than directly from the peasantry.
As the tales began to be written down during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, however, they ceased to change, and gradually became relegated to the nursery, as children's tales; this shift coincided with a rise in literacy which established the middle class and with a corresponding increased differentiation between child and adult.
By the middle of the 19th century, the fairy tale was firmly established as a subset of "children's literature," even as writers continued to produce tales of this type that appealed to a broad spectrum of ages.

How the Yellow Ribbon Became a National Folk Symbol (The American Folklife Center, Library of Congress)
Some assertions on this subject have verged on the pugnacious; nearly all have made reference to the song "Round Her Neck She Wore A Yellow Ribbon." That song was recorded for the Archive of Folk Culture in 1938 by Sidney Robertson Cowell in California, but it is much older.
And thus a modern folk legend concerning a newly released prisoner was transformed into a popular song, and the popular song, in turn, transformed into a ritual enactment.
Ultimately, the thing that makes the yellow ribbon a genuinely traditional symbol is neither its age nor its putative association with the American Civil War, but rather its capacity to take on new meanings, to fit new needs and, in a word, to evolve.
