Folk punk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Folk punk is seen as exploring the legacy of traditional American folk music, which often contained themes of working class solidarity and community resistance facing the encroaching problems of industrialization and modern capitalism.
Folk punk is a genre of music that combines elements of folk and punk rock music.
Among these are Against Me!- perhaps the best known folk punk band - although their sound has been moving more and more towards general punk rock and has moved away from the DIY (do it yourself) ethic that is central to the genre.

Anti-folk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anti-folk had its roots in punk rock, and is still considered by some to be an active subgenre within that scene.
Anti-folk (or antifolk) is a genre of music related to punk rock and American folk music that originated in the mid-1980s in New York City.
Anti-folk, as appropriated by Beck on albums such as Mellow Gold and Stereopathetic Soul Manure, mixes the musical style of folk music with punk, as well as ironic and often nonsensical lyrics.

 Rock and roll
Punk rock attracted devotees from the art and collegiate world and soon bands sporting a more literate, arty approach, such as the Talking Heads and Devo began to infiltrate the punk scene; in some quarters the description New Wave began to be used to differentiate these less overtly punk bands.
Punk and post-punk bands would continue to appear sporadically, but as a musical scene, punk had largely self-destructed and been subsumed into mainstream new-wave pop by the mid-1980s, but the influence of punk has been substantial.
If punk rock was a social and musical phenomenon, it garnered little in the way of record sales (small specialty labels such as Stiff Records had released much of the punk music to date) or American radio airplay, as the radio scene continued to be dominated by mainstream formats such as disco and Album-Oriented Rock.

 alt.punk as folk group
Punk has spun off many divergent styles that can all be classified under the larger heading "punk", and therefore alt.punk is made up of a lot of people with very diverging interests and styles.
Since alt.punk is ostensibly about punk music and culture, all types of music exchanging are ways to build networks both within the newsgroup, and in the larger punk "subculture".
Admittedly, the term "punk" has become far too complicated to properly deconstruct within the confines of this paper; the "regulars" on alt.punk probably could not agree on a definition that would satisfy everyone.
