The United States of America — also referred to as the United States, the U.S.A., the U.S., America¹, the States, or (archaically) Columbia — is a federal republic of 50 states located primarily in central North America (with the exception of two states: Alaska and Hawaii).
The United States does not have an official language at federal level; nevertheless, English is spoken by the vast majority of the population and serves as the de facto language: English is the language used for legislation, regulations, executive orders, treaties, federal court rulings, and all other official pronouncements.
The United States is also a great center of higher education, boasting more than 4,000 universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning, the top tier of which may be considered to be among the most prestigious and advanced in the world.

Folklorists have given rather little attention to the folklore of the Civil War, probably because the paradigms underlying the study of folklore in the United States generally have been ahistorical ones, with emphasis placed on collecting contemporary folklore and upon emphasizing the folklore of contemporary groups such as ethnic groups.
The importance of the War and the folklore of the War in shaping Southern identity is certainly an issue folklorists might pursue.
One could argue that this folklore is very important historical documentation of slavery, given that the slaves did not generally record their own reactions to their experiences in writing, having to resort to oral means of expression.
