Folktronica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Folktronica or Electrofolk is a genre of music comprised of varying elements of folk music and electronica.
The label "folktronica" seems to have originated in the British press, having come to encompass performers and bands that include elements of ambient electronica, folk, jazz, classical, and even hip-hop.
Folktronica was a term first used to describe the music of British producer Kieran Hebden (Four Tet).

Folktronica, a style combining folk and electronica music, is one of the few new genres to come to life in recent years.
The name itself is said to be dubbed by the British press in 2001 while trying to describe a new breed of producer that utilizes elements of ambient electronica, acoustic folk, jazz, psychedelia and even instrumental hip-hop.
Also along the lines of jazz is the song structure of a typical folktronica song, which reminisces of free jazz where a theme is introduced, but soloists are not constrained to stay within that melody and are allowed to progress on their own.

One of the key artists of the "folktronica" movement Kieran Hebden, a.k.a., Four Tet, mixes samples of jazz, acoustic, and lite psychedelic with midtempo techno and hip-hop beats to create a uniquely warm and organic form of electronica.
The superb Rounds, released in summer 2003, honed the folktronica style to something close to perfection and was nominated by many critics in their end of year "best of" polls.
Released in May 2005, the album shifted away from the folktronica style into an unsettling mix of Krautrock and free jazz.

Conflating folktronica, post-rock, and electronica into a single song, “Electrolooks” revisits the ‘60s with its organ flourishes, but the song eventually transforms into a pulsating analog bruiser with its sonic mass extended by banjo and glockenspiel.
Halfset's debut album is a pleasing collection of folktronica that initially sits comfortably in the background -- but before you know it, it climbs to the top of its own giant day-glow shamrock and demands your attention, even as it's chilling you out.
Folktronica would be an easy tag but in the main it doesn’t quite fit.

In May of 2001, Keiran Hebden released the album Pause under the name Four Tet, and was credited with inventing the folktronica musical genre.
Though a marriage of the words “folk” and “electronica” may be an unholy sin against semantics, Kieran Hebden’s amalgam brings exciting hip-hop beats and rhymes together with innovative computer composition to create experimental electronic music within an unusually warm atmosphere.

The record is beautifully produced with sounds, bleeps, samples and noises reminiscent of Autechre and Aphex Twin heavily embedded in the music thanks, largely, to Phil Winters the "laptop man".
Tunng are a hard band to pigeon hole with Mike Lindsay feeling the misnomer "folktronica" is perhaps too misleading and the range of acoustic instruments, earthy melodies, brooding lyrics and eclectic samples create a warm sound placed a million miles from their contemporaries.

When the hipster music press coined the term ‘folktronica’ a few years back, little did they know it would become one of the more loathed words in the indie music idiom.
A lazy catch-all term for a growing number of artists who incorporated acoustic samples into electronic music, folktronica lumped together musicians – including Four Tet, múm, Caribou and Matmos – who were, in reality, each making their own very different styles of music.
Lindsay even suspects that irritating journalistic expressions like ‘folktronica’ have played a small part in Tunng’s success.
