..A record label is a label that holds a contract for all production rights of a musician for a certain time period or for a certain amount of products.

Most of these recordings were made between the 1930s and the 1960s, by collectors such as Laura Boulton and Walter Garwick, under conditions that would now be considered unethical but that were standard practice in their day.
Thus, fewer scholars and students work in archives on recordings made by other collectors, where the documentation of such recordings is inaccurate or shallow with respect to context, and where the cultural property rights issues surrounding particular recordings have not been resolved or even addressed.
For an example of Laura Boulton's recording notes (the kinds of records we are working with) click here to view the catalog of her recordings of Eskimo songs and folk tales in Point Barrow, Alaska (secure.pdf format, 1.3 MB file).

Mike BL I'm jumping in, but in the interest of not discouraging anyone from starting a label, it really should be pointed out that, despite taking such an authoratative tone, AudioWebs doesn't seem to know jack shit about how record labels work in the year 2003 -- especially not independent labels.
Slapping labels onto CDs of a pretty hack-job label if you ask me. And besides you aren't gonna be dealing with the actual playing and recording music.
Labels "making it" seems to be largely about filling a niche.
