		Eric B's DJ style is highly reductive, with the slimmest of samples inserted over the trebly break-beat, but this only seeks to brilliantly highlight the skills of his partner, whose highly verbose and ingenious wordplay is widely credited as being the most influential in the history of hip hop.
		Rakim may be the greatest MC to ever lay his rhymes to tape but it is the explosion of sophistication from Eric B that really sets this album apart and exhorts the newly born upstarts to follow their lead.
		Eric B and Rakim were the best, they knew it, and the resulting album is a work of art that is brimming with such self-acknowledged greatness that its pleasures are almost pornographic.

		Rakim comes on the mic and simply rips it apart, giving us a song about his opinion on hip-hop music and how it should be handled with care.
		Rakim is much calmer, but still poses a threat to his peers, and fitting nicely with his slow, melodic flow is the slow, minimalistic beat.
		Eric B. and Rakim proved that they were a critical success and seemingly untouchable on Paid in Full indeed, but with Follow the Leader, the duo cemented their presence in hip-hop as not only pioneers, but two artists who you don't want to fuck with.

		Rakim's freestyles are great, and he would take time for progressive talk & social commentary, never succumbing to gangster-rap cliches.
		For a group that never really had crossover success (unless you count the fact that the "Paid in Full" breakbeat showed up in any number of pop records), I'm glad that Universal/Chronicles is taking the time out to explore their hip-hop catalog and expose these pioneering releases to new audiences and old ones alike.
