Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
IMHO the power of this film lies in that technique and I kinda find it a little fun that Henry was so controversial when it was first release.
This controversy wasn't based on the gore in the film, even thought we were lead to believe that, no it was because of the realism of the subject matter.
Filming the movies from Henry's viewpoint, rather than from the victims' or the cops who are trying to track him down, was very original.

The Film Journal...Passionate and informed film criticism from an auteurist perspective.
Big budget films shot on the top digital technology with full crew and comprehensive post-production will undoubtedly look far better than the average low-budget digital feature and the film star, special fx qualities of the major films with large marketing campaigns behind them will surely continue to dominate theatrical distribution and box office.
Films are and will continue to be financed predominantly on the risk that the films will make their money back for the investors.
As a result, not only has the film posted a loss, but very few people have been to see the film and indeed very few people apart from those in London and maybe a few cities around the country will have been able to see the film in its short release period.

The film and accompanying instructor notes examine the economic, political, religious, and educational status of women, their legal and customary rights, and the degree of change in their actual and perceived roles.
The film also examines the failure to fully understand the hatred of America among Muslim fundamentalists, and it traces the roots of this rage to Washington's support for Israel and for authoritarian regimes in the oil-rich Middle East.
The film tells the story of four Beirut citizens from very different backgrounds as they struggle to reconstruct their homes and lives amid the chaos, the broken buildings, and the unexploded mines of their once-beautiful city.

Film & TV: Following (Austin Chronicle . 01-24-00)
Cobb, or at least the hapless Bill cannot, and in no time (the film is brief, after all), this "game" of following has begun to develop some curious, dark undertones (not the least of which is a mysterious blond B-girl with connections to what looks like one of the Brothers Kray).
Following ends on a contrived note, sadly by its last 20 minutes it's become as predictable as its protagonist, but up to then it's a sublime exercise in paranoid, mobile voyeurism.
He milks his premise for every drop of tension he can wring from it, and the film is gorgeously shot and complemented by an edgy, breakbeat soundtrack that waxes and wanes with the action onscreen.

 MEMENTO - DVD
The film cleverly sets up a classic genre scenario and then rejects it, taking its protagonist and revealing him to be a bit player deluded into thinking he's the hero.
Watching Leonard, we are led to believe that the film is about his tragedy: as he assures everyone that he remembers everything up until the incident that destroyed his mind, it appears as though the film is a lament for a pre-lapsarian world in which moral--i.e.
This led me to assume that the remainder of the film would wallow in the tragic poignancy of a once-proud man robbed of the things that made him a credit to the patriarchy, and not only was this ideologically suspect, it was boring as hell.

"Following" was his directorial and screenwriting debut, a very short but effective suspense thriller with a gimmick that doesn't wear out its welcome.
Nolan photographed this film in 16MM fl and white and this no-budget gem plants the seeds of brilliance that come to fruition in 2001's Memento.
Not wasting a second of screen time, "Following" is a prime example for what can be accomplished with a good script, decent photography, and the will to get a film in the can.

 Paths Of Glory (1957)
The suicidal attack on an impregnable fortress named 'Ant Hill' in the film (against an unseen German enemy) was inspired by and loosely based upon the six-month bloodbath in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun for Fort Douamont, a French stronghold eventually captured by the Germans.
The film, a treatise on human injustice, opens with briskly-played martial music - "La Marseillaise" - from a brass band and a snare drum - while the credits (white text-on-a-fl background) are shown.
Memorably filmed like a documentary (without a sweeping musical score), the lengthy and fluid tracking shots follow him from behind, then from in front, as the bombardment increases - the air is full of mortar explosions, the sound of machine guns and rifle fire, and the whine of bombs.

I can understand it not winning an Emmy because it's a foreign film and they are generally ignored except for "Best Foreign Film," as well as the fact that it has the word "GayNig ger" in the title which would have offended the family audience viewing the Emmys on TV.
Don't be fooled: this movie is not racist; the phrase "Gaynigger" doesn't have the same connotations in Denmark.
This film is an excellent satire of not only the dull turn science fiction had taken in the past decades, but also a satire of racial and sexual relations.

Watching a film's moving image, other than just for pure entertainment's sake, is usually enhanced by viewing it with an informed awareness of how a film works, and with some understanding, skill and background training in the elements of the craft of film-making.

Watch a film in a movie theater, if possible, where it was designed to be projected, or purchase the film in a 'wide-screen' format or in its original format.

Writing the Film Evaluation: An Exercise in Critical Thinking
It is your task to evaluate the new film as fairly and completely as possible, to move on ahead as a fan of the particular artist, but to be open-minded and willing to criticize if that proves necessary.
Accordingly, as noted by Lunsford, “in an evaluation of a movie, a paragraph (or a block of paragraphs) might be given to acting, a paragraph (or block) to cinematography, and a paragraph (or block) to special effects.
I always ask my students to develop a rating scale to conclude their film evaluations (one they explain to the readers like a 5-Star system) because they are, in fact, film critics.

A complicated time structure (the film flashes backwards and forwards) signals that more is going on here than meets the eye.
