Folsom Prison Blues - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Folsom Prison Blues" is an American country music song written by Johnny Cash in the early 1950s and originally recorded with his trio in 1956 for the Sun Records label.
In the lyrics, the jailed protagonist listens to the whistle of the train outside his cell and recounts his deeds (this song's most famous line is undoubtedly "I shot a man in Reno/just to watch him die"); imagines the free people inside the train; and dreams of what he would do if he were free.
Cash included the song in his repertoire for decades; the definitive live performance is considered to be the opening song of a concert recorded at Folsom Prison itself on January 13, 1968.

The Folsom Prison Museum offers a look at torturous prison conditions in decades after the California Gold Rush populated the Sierra Nevada foothills that start here, 20 miles east of Sacramento.
The prison museum is the only one operating in California, and the one of few in the nation, though San Quentin plans to reopen its museum shortly.

Word got around on the prison grapevine that I was okay, and the next thing I knew I got a letter from San Quentin, asking me to perform at their annual New Year's show on January 1, 1958.
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison went Gold the year it was released, and "Folsom Prison Blues" re-entered the country charts-a dozen years after the Top Five success of the studio version-and went to Number One.

 Soapbox: Keb' No!
For what is probably Johnny's most famous song, "Folsom Prison Blues", the huge honor of doing that song was given to blues artist Keb' Mo'.
Keb' Mo' does acoustic-based bluesy stuff, plays acoustic Delta slide guitar, is one of the few "new" fl blues artists to come out in a while, and from what I have heard of his stuff is a pretty talented guy.
At the time "Cocaine Blues" was written (by T.J. Arnall, first released in 1947 by Roy Hogshead), cocaine was thought of as relatively benign (though illegal), even having positive uses in medicine.

There are also interviews, some searingly candid, with the prisoners and guards who were present when the Johnny Cash Show packed the big house.
Backed by his scythe-sharp band, the Tennessee Three, Cash's quavering bass-baritone renders hits, hymns, history (personal and American), humor and, of course, the singular "boom-chicka-boom" railroad rhythm that is one of Country music's most ineffable, instantly identifiable sounds.
