 Monospaced versus Proportional
If the font seems to be changed you could also remove the hinting related data, although this will result in a quality decrease.
In a proportional font the width of each character, including the space character, varies with the shape of the character.
Proportional fonts are easier to read and are preferred for publishing applications.

PostScript - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Type 3 fonts allowed for all the sophistication of the PostScript language, but without the standardized approach to hinting.
The rich font system used the PS graphics primitives to draw characters as line art, which could then be rendered at any resolution.
One is that the fonts on other systems required the user to keep not only bitmaps for the screen, but also Type 1 for the printer.

 Truetype versus type 1
There are human-readable forms of type 1 fonts, and somehow, the fonts feel like the cars from the fifties and sixties---in case of a problem, they can easily be fixed by the driver or any random mechanic, unlike the modern day machines with their electronic ignitions and remote control starters.
The type 1 people put the absolute minimum in a font: name information, character width information, an encoding vector (the encoding vector says in what numerical position we must place the letter "a", for example), and the character outlines in the form of cubic Bezier curves.
It is clear that nearly all fonts descend from the type 1 tribe.

The font technology was generally considered inferior because it did not allow hinting to make the fonts reproduce well on 300-dpi laser printers, although they generally were fine on filmsetters.

 type 1 fonts
The hinting method of the Type 1 format is relatively simple: Most hints are declarative statements stating where key features of a character are located.
The 1000 to 1 scaling in the Font- Matrix as shown is typical of a Type 1 font program and is highly recommended.
It is important that every Type 1 font program and every PostScript language program start with a ``%!'' comment; otherwise, it may not be given the appropriate handling in some operating system environments.

D-Type Font Engine has a built-in auto-hinting subsystem that produces absolutely stunning results with virtually any font.
To achieve this goal, unique algorithms had to be invented or developed: sophisticated anti-aliased rendering, revolutionary font hinting/auto-hinting and advanced real-time font interpolation are just a few of them.
The goal of the project from the beginning was to create a superior font and scalable graphics rendering engine suitable for all types of applications - including the most demanding ones such as games and multi-media.

Delta hinting makes bitmap on-screen displays of character glyph s look better on screen, at the expense of distorting the design of the actual glyph shape.
However, the construction and size of « big font s » dictates that these extra delta hint instructions be used judiciously, so as not to bloat the size of the font.
The biggest dilemma with delta hints is that TrueType fonts can be installed on systems having a variety of display resolutions, and each combination of point size and display resolution must be anticipated.

Microsoft Typography - TrueType Hinting (4 of 5):How Does Hinting Help?
Adding it to the right or left will affect the spacing of characters that precede or follow the letter 'i' in a word, while adding to the stem width will normally make it too heavy for the rest of the characters in the font.
These are important considerations, for as the illustrations below show, intercharacter spacing can have a profound effect on the legibility of a font.
The color of words is determined and complicated by a number of issues - such as the contrast between thick and thin stem weights, the size of the characters' internal spaces, the amounts of intercharacter spacing and interlinear spacing, the jaggedness of diagonal strokes, and the overall thickness of a stroke.

Hinting, as well as other processes involving the use of a font, is time-consuming.
However, once a font character's outline is cached, the hinting process has already taken place and never needs to be repeated unless the cache is distroyed.
In color devices, the situation is less clear, because a color hue is produced by using more than one primary or process color simultaneously, each color being limited to the width or height of a dot or pixel; and the spatial relationship or separation between dots or pixels is also an influencing factor.

It does not allow you to combine glyphs from several fonts into a new font, since this requires an impossible integration of the hinting instructions and other compiled aspects of the contributing fonts.
You can convert TrueType fonts between the so-called Microsoft, Apple, and Macintosh variants of the TrueType format, since these variations are simply configurations of encoding and naming tables (however, if the Macintosh font doesn't contain the full set of Windows glyphs with the proper names, the Windows version will be incomplete).
Specifying a value for i in excess of the allowed range will result in an error message and the expected font object will not be pushed on the stack.

It could also (though I haven't heard of anyone doing this) contain the same basic font in both PostScript format for printing on paper and TrueType format for rendering on screen -- given that the one place where TrueType really shines is in hinting for the screen.
By virtue of its huge character set, a single OpenType font could contain not only Cyrillic and Greek versions of the same font but compatible kanji and devanagiri fonts, if someone went to the considerable trouble of designing such a super-family.

However, if the typographer hinting the font made all, or most, of the characters take up extra space on the line, the words might start to run together since there are only a finite number of pixels between each word.
Because the font rasterizers were originally designed to exist only within the printer, there was no way to communicate the width of each character back to the application in the host computer.
One of the great typographic strengths of TrueType that cannot be matched by other font scaling solutions is its ability to perform what is known as non-linear scaling.

Another result of Apple’s decision to publish the complete specifications of its outline font system is that we can expect to see one or more font editors enter the market that will allow the artist to completely specify the hinting required for the best possible quality at small point sizes.
Apple’s font descriptions, using quadratic splines, are designed to be simple enough that it is reasonable to use them for interactive displays such as the Macintosh itself; the original Postscript model (which uses Bezier curves - a more complex equation form) is oriented towards printing engines.
Apple’s stated goals for System 7.0 required that the entire internal design approach for these drivers be changed.

In digital fonts, the image of each character may be encoded either as a bitmap (in a bitmap font) or by a higher-level description in terms of lines and curves enclosing space (an outline font, also called "vector font").
In typography, a typeface is a co-ordinated set of character designs, which usually comprises an alphabet of letters, a set of numerals and a set of punctuation marks.

During the 13 years at Monotype (now Agfa Monotype) Steve was able to establish himself as a type designer in tune with the most current font technologies.
He produced fonts for the Monotype library (such as Goudy Ornate and Gill Floriated Capitals) and directed extensive branding projects such as Agilent Technology's corporate sans serif and Microsoft's new corporate font family 'Segoe'.
This technology proved to be the perfect training ground for developing TrueType fonts and in 1990 he began work at Monotype to create the Windows core TrueType fonts: Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New.
