TVA had wanted to build a hydroelectric dam at Fontana since the early days, but an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), which controlled the land, was elusive.
Though some were of draft age—one sign at Fontana admonished, “Work or Fight!”—many were men a little too long in the tooth to worry about the draft, a lot of them veterans of World War I. By 1943, the number of workers had grown to approximately 5,000.
By then Fontana had a beauty parlor and a barber shop; a basketball court and a softball field; a post office, library, grocery, and soda stand; a dentist’s office and a small hospital; a movie theater; a school with a dozen teachers and 300 students; even a tiny jail.

Fontana Dam N.C. A word of advice for early thru-hikers that don't use maildrops.
The hotel rooms are a great deal for thru-hikers tho as they are only around 25 bucks for thru-hikers and the hostel is I think 15 which allows dogs (which you'll have to have shuttled around the smokies at this point anyways).
Another note here is that Fontana Village is dry and it cost me and Yang (from hikers yin and yang) 60 bucks for a case of beer since we had to pay to be shuttled into Bryson.

The Dam Jam dates are July 30 - August 1.

I used Jeff Hoch from The Hike Inn to shuttle me from his motel near Fontana, to the trail where it leaves Standing Indian Park.
