The Trevi Fountain (in Italian, Fontana di Trevi) is the largest (standing 85 feet high and 65 feet wide) and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome.
The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present bland allegories for planned sculptures of Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin.
The Fontana di Trevi is the 'Three Coins in the Fountain' fountain, the one that drenched Anita Ekberg in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita.

The fountain at the juncture of three roads (tre vie) marks the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo (in Italian: Acqua Vergine), one of the ancient (A conduit that resembles a bridge but carries water over a valley) aqueducts that supplied water to Rome.
Nicola Salvi died in 1751, with his work half-finished, but before he went he made sure a stubborn barber's unsightly sign would not spoil the ensemble, hiding it behind a sculpted vase.
The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present bland allegories for planned sculptures of (Roman general who commanded the fleet that defeated the forces of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium (63-12 BC)) Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin.

The building, which was a Papal Parish for centuries, preserves the hearts and lungs of 22 popes who died in the Quirinal Palace standing nearby: from Sixtus V, who died in 1590, to Leo XIII, who died in 1903.
The fountain is the terminai part of the Vergine aqueduct built by Agrippa, a general of Augustus, in 19 B.C. to bring the water coming from the Salone springs, 19 km away, to Rome.
This is the aqueduct that supplies the water to the monumental fountains of the historic centre, from Piazza Navona to Piazza di Spagna.

It’s interesting to see a Renaissance sculpture that copies ancient Roman-style, a style itself copied from the Greeks, topped with an Egyptian obelisk, crested by a Catholic saint or cross – post-modernism religion, some 500 years before post-modernism was born.
This photo doesn't do the Fontana di Trevi justice - this is only maybe 1/2 the width of the entire thing, but there's no good way to get a picture of the whole mass because it's crammed in such a small piazza.
