Fontanelle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In human anatomy, a fontanelle (or fontanel) is one of two "soft spots" on a newborn human's skull.
At birth, the skull features a small posterior fontanelle, an open area covered by a tough membrane, where the two parietal bones adjoin the occipital bone.
This fontanelle remains open until the child is about two years of age.

Junkmedia: Fontanelle : Style Drift   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Fontanelle's second full-length effort counts among the more interesting releases 2002 had to offer, though its creators' idiom (electric jazz) and most thrilling characteristic (sick-ass improvisation) ensured it a place outside the popular consciousness.
Portland, Ore.-based Fontanelle's sound is not commercial, yet it is a familiar one to those with a grasp of the seminal electronic jazz of the 1970s and its modern day devotees, such as Tortoise and the Chicago Underground groups.
Fontanelle is jacked in, tightly lacing together the musical parameters of each song without overindulging in wankery.

 Fontanelle - s/t (Kranky)
Fontanelle operates much in the same way that Jessamine did, recording lots of sessions and improvisation, then choosing which parts would make good songs, and the resulting self-titled album has a feel much similar to Jessamine's last album.
While the Fontanelle album is similar to Jessamine's last and does seem like a logical next step Jessamine could have taken, that next step, incorporating more of a jazz fusion influence into their effervescent drones, is a major one and could leave some old fans behind.
The album works well on 2 different levels: it is subdued enough to accompany the day-to-day as incidental music, and it is subtle and intricate enough to warrant close inspection and dedicated listening.

This is an EP (or EP priced album, I am not sure, although I am sure you can buy it for an EP price, which is nice because it is almost forty minutes long) of almost B-sides that were recorded at the same time as Fontanelle’s last album.
Fontanelle has carried over some of the same electronic sounds Jessamine is known for.
Fontanelle produces splendid melodies and impressive musicianship, but needs a third element of impact to seal the deal.

Fontanelle by Babes In Toyland (lyrics & reviews)
She has the remarkable ability to scream at the listener non-stop over the near-forty minutes of this album, but in such a way that is undeniably pleasurable to listen to.
There is one chilling moment on "Mother" the thirteenth song on the album when she goes from a full throated growl to a sharp, sustained scream in a single breath.
I bought "Fontanelle" one day and was completely blown away by the intense lyrics and vocals by Kat Bjelland and the powerful drumming of Lori Barbero (best drummer hands down).

Babes in Toyland's most focused and powerful statement, Fontanelle was vaguely associated with grunge upon its release, and tossed in with the Pacific Northwest-centered riot grrrl movement after the fact.
Fontanelle isn't necessarily explicitly feminist, since the glorious noise of rock & roll is viewed as the ultimate empowerment.
Measured by any standard, Fontanelle is a frighteningly primal record, one whose sheer ferocity Babes in Toyland never quite captured this convincingly anywhere else.

The debut album, Fontanelle, extends and develops the sound of the last Jessamine album, Don't Stay Too Long, taking the bubbling electric piano and synthesizers of that album into even more complex patterns.
The music on  the F CD EP is taken from various sessions over Fontanelle¹s first 3 years, reflecting a variety of moods.
Fontanelle takes drums, keyboards and guitars, tightens up the interplay and weaves taut patterns that touch on the liquidity of fusion jazz and the crystalline angles of IDM electronics.

With their new band, the pair has employed a variable lineup to further explore the warm, ambient synth-and-guitar sound towards which Jessamine was moving at the time of its breakup.
As warm and ambient as this band sounds, their sound is far from relaxing; rather, they invoke the slightly dangerous, tense, exotic flavor of Herbie Hancock's late '60s/early '70s electric piano work and the hallucinatory, hypnotic qualities of '70s krautrock.
Released in 2001, Fontanelle's F is a collection of tracks taken from three years of recording sessions, including those which produced the band's debut album.

earpollution album reviews [page 1] - issue 2.Ø7, july 2ØØØ
The beauty of this album is in the transition--Euro Boy, the fashionably sexy Glam guitarist from the defunct Norwegian band Turbonegro, heads up Euro Boys in a very acoustic and well-done virtually instrumental CD that embraces many influences from days past.
Born out of the demise of the Portland, Oregon-based Jessamine, Fontanelle--the duo of guitarist Rex Ritter and keyboardist Andy Brown (and others)--weaves melodic improvisational structures that are the expressive outgrowth of a pop song's desire to be wildly devoid of lyrical content.
This album has several bright, soulful moments...especially on "Truth" and the superior "Top of the Bottom," indicating not only that they are a safe bet live, but a band with future potential as well.

In the 90s, Portland was not very receptive to experimental music (especially because of narrow-minded concert venues that only accepted Rock), and we all found each other at the same time in the late 90s when the music scene started to be more open-minded and clubs were having stranger music.
In many ways Fontanelle began because our various past groups came to record at Magnetic Park, which is now only used to record Fontanelle and other private projects or projects of friends.
The name "Fontanelle" was not chosen for it's meaning but for the sound of the word.

Fontanelle's music is too abstract to get a handle on--neither bad enough to ridicule nor powerful enough to arouse passions nor weird enough to produce a cult following.
