Fonthill Abbey — also known as Beckford's Folly — was a large Gothic-style building built in the turn of the (additional info and facts about 19th century) 19th century in (additional info and facts about Wiltshire) Wiltshire, (A division of the United Kingdom) England.
Fonthill Abbey was a brainchild of (additional info and facts about William Thomas Beckford) William Thomas Beckford, son of a wealthy English businessman and student of (Someone who creates plans to be used in making something (such as buildings)) architect Sir (English architect (1723-1796)) William Chambers.
Beckford lived in Fonthill Abbey until 1822 when he lost two of his Jamacian (A white crystalline carbohydrate used as a sweetener and preservative) sugar plantations in a legal action.

William the Norman made a grant of land at Fonthill and Berengar Giffard is recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as the holder of part of Fonthill, in contradistinction to the land at Fonthill Bishop granted to the Bishops of Winchester in 901.
In 1745 the Fonthill Estate was bought by AldermanWilliam Beckford (Lord Mayor of London in 1768 and 1770).When Fonthill House was burnt down in 1755 Alderman Beckford had a new Fonthill House built a little to the south of the old building and to the west of the lake.
The site for the second Fonthill Gifford church, built by Alderman Beckford between 1747 and 1749, was near the crossroads on the eastern boundary of the parish and dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

Although Fonthill offers all of the modern conveniences including electricity, running water, an Otis elevator, and steam heat, fixtures are cleverly intertwined into the grand scheme of Mercer's highly imaginative manor.
Fonthill and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, as well as the Mercer Museum (also built by Mercer in 1913) are all National Historic Landmarks and should not be missed by anyone who appreciates history, mystical journeys and unforgettable handcrafted art.

Resembling a Spanish mission, the factory, like Fonthill itself, is constructed of concrete around a courtyard that permits work to be performed outdoors in good weather.
Ignoring the warnings of other architects, he set out to construct what would be one of the first freestanding concrete structures custom-molded around such modern conveniences as indoor plumbing, central heating and an early Otis elevator -- all innovative features for any dwelling in 1908.

 A Visit to Fonthill
Fonthill Abbey was almost grotesquely vast: the tower of the Great Octagon soared upwards for 300 feet, and was so fantastically perpendicular that it collapsed several times, the final time in 1825 due to improper foundations.
The main entrance to Fonthill estate is beneath a most charming Entrance Lodge (still occupied), once the gateway to Beckford's father's mansion Fonthill Splendens.
A narrow lane beside it leads down to a bridge on Fonthill Lake, where there is a unique boat house with 12 stone pillars and arches, tumbling into ruins like a watery basilica.

Fonthill Abbey was built by the Gothic novelist and wealthy eccentric William Beckford in 1796; it was a huge building, with a central octagonal tower 280 feet high, and main doors 35 feet in height.
A few parts of the building remain in the park near Fonthill Gifford in Wiltshire, where the local pub is called the Beckford Arms.
This attempt to recreate the building, using 3D modelling techniques, was a project undertaken by Mike Harrisson during his MSc course at the University of Huddersfield in 1997.

Beckford spent a large part of his later life in complete isolation in Fonthill Abbey, a large house in gothic style especially built for him.
The house had cost him around 273,000 pounds and financial problems forced him to sell it in 1822, together with part of his collections.
After his daughter, the Duchess of Hamilton, bought back the Lansdown Tower (part of Fonthill Abbey) she gave it to Walcot parish to be used as a cemetery and Beckford was reburied there.
