Assuming former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl dreads the thought of forever being known as "the guy from Kurt Cobain's band," the last thing he'd want to hear is that the debut album from his new band Foo Fighters sounds much like one from the deceased duke of grunge.
While some may argue it lacks the emotion and personal feel of the band's sophomore release, I respond that this release was spurred on by death (as opposed to separation/divorce in the other album's case) and consequentially has more raw feeling to it than anything that would ever follow.
even though it has the name foo fighters on the front this is not a foo's album as the first offical foo's album was the colour and the shape two years later in 1997 with pat smear-guitars-nate mendal-bass-dave grohl playin' most of the drums.

Foo Fighters is former Nirvana guitarist Dave Grohl's new band.
Foo Fighters' first club tour as headliners is a self-consciously bare-bones affair, and Grohl is trying mightily to let people know that he is simply an ordinary man attempting to rebound from extraordinary circumstances.
Foo Fighters might sound like the work of four angry young men -- screechy pop songs, swirls of feedback and tuneful punk anthems -- but Grohl is to the band's debut what Trent Reznor Is to Nine Inch Nails or Wings reruns are to the USA Network.

 BBC - h2g2 - Foo Fighters - the Band
Of all the bands riding the tide of thrift-store fashion and fragile musical angst, the most important were the Seattle trio known as Nirvana.
Held up in the present-day as a band as important in their own time as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, Nirvana gave a voice to the disillusioned masses of middle-class American youth who, despite the fact they faced no great economic or social hardships in life, still felt a melancholy of the soul.

As a band, the Foo Fighters have had their share of turmoil: Foo mastermind Dave Grohl's lengthy, post-Nirvana legal sniping with Kurt Cobain's widow, diva Courtney Love; drummer Taylor Hawkins' painkiller overdose in 2001; then rumors that the band was done when Grohl toured with Queens of the Stone Age earlier this year.
Essentially a solo project when he released the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut in 1995, Grohl brought a more straightforward rock approach to the post-punk he was performing with Nirvana.
That's not to say that the Foo Fighters have abandoned pop hooks and the kind of riffs that land them all over the FM airwaves.
