Most of the ports had ample dock facilities and repair yards, which were necessary to deal with frequent accidents owing to the dangerous navigation between the ports and the sea, and along the coast, though Foochow was notable in not possessing a dock until late in the fifties.
The best fl teas were grown in the province of Fukien for which Foochow was the chief port, and to which fact it owed its rapid growth to become the most important loading port.
In the next decade a few ships used to get away from Foochow at the end of May and at about the same time from Hankow, which was in the centre of some of the other tea districts.

A British consular post office was established in Foochow in 1844 and handstruck marks inscribed 'FOOCHOWFOO POST PAID' or 'FOOCHOFOO CHINA' with a crown in the centre are known from 1863.
The post office was controlled by the GPO in London until January 1868 when responsibility was transfered to Hong Kong and it remaind under their control until 1922 when it closed down.
An agency of the Shanghai local post operated in Foochow in the early 1890s but in August 1894 a committee of public works was formed to set up a special Foochow local service.

 Hartwell, Hannah Louisa Plimpton Peet Finding Aid
He was a missionary to Foochow, China whose wife, Rebecca Sherrill Peet, had recently died, leaving him with three young children: Jane, Frances, and Anna.
Louisa Plimpton Peet returned to Foochow in 1884 with her daughter and son-in-law and in 1885 married the Reverend Charles Hartwell, who had served as missionary in China since 1853.
Hannah Louisa Plimpton Peet Hartwell died in Foochow on December 7, 1908 at the age of eighty-five.

The most famous bisect is the Foochow Bisect, popularly called 颶風票 - hurricane stamp or 颱風票 - typhoon stamp by collectors.
On October 22, 1903, because of the shortage of 1 cent stamps, the postmaster of Foochow ordered that the 2 cents red coiling dragon stamps to be bisected diagonally into two halves.
Each half stamp was used as 1 cent and handstamped with a specially made boxed "Postage 1 Cent Paid" rubber stamp.
