 LobbyWatch.org...
The main reason for the establishment of the FSA was the collapse in public trust which occurred during the BSE crisis, when civil servants within the then Ministry of Agriculture Food and Fisheries (MAFF) were widely perceived as putting the interests of producers ahead of those of consumers.
In contrast to the FSA position, a survey undertaken for the Consumers' Association in the summer of 2002 showed that 94 per cent of consumers think that food containing GM ingredients should be labelled.
But just as worrying as the FSA's attack on organics, in the eyes of many, has been its role in backing the position of the US government and the biotechnology industry in opposing strict EU labelling and traceability rules on GM foods and animal feed.

 Food Standards Agency proposed
On 14 January the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) and the Department of Health launched a government White Paper, The Food Standards Agency: a force for change, that would create an over-arching independent body—the Food Standards Agency (FSA)—to protect consumer interests in every area of food safety.
It recommended that responsibility of the food safety evaluation of pesticides and veterinary medicines should transfer to the new Agency.
The NFA also expressed concern that if the food industry funded the FSA it may compromise the Agency’s independence, and raise food prices, hitting poor consumers hardest.

 New Food Standards Agency Head
We have confidence that the new FSA head will restore the proper sense of balance and integrity that is desperately required to make us think once again of food as being something more pleasurable than Tim Lang's cause of premature death.
It is, perhaps, because Sir John is such a rational person that the Consumers' Association and food activists such as Professor Tim Lang have described his selection as 'bizarre' and 'disappointing'.
Professor Lang, of course, who teaches food policy at Thames Valley University, views food as simply "a key factor in our main sources of premature death" - a notion which is virtually meaningless and certainly quite unscientific.

A spokeswoman for the Atkins company argued that research showed it was consumption of large amounts of carbohydrates with a high-glycemic index, such as white bread, white rice or white potatoes, which increased the risk of coronary heart disease.
