Food and drink manufacturing is the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK, accounting for almost 15% of the UK’s total manufacturing (Food and Drink Federation, 2005).
Those working in food service management, although not the highest paid in the industry, are increasingly being rewarded with benefits, training opportunities and sometimes travel as their careers progress.

FDF looks to the maintenance of international standards in food safety, which cannot be compromised—technological assistance, technology transfer and other technical support will be necessary to enable developing countries to meet these standards.

Combined with the agricultural sector and the grocery retail business, the food and drink industry is the biggest sector in the Irish economy.Turnover in 2001 is estimated 13 billion.

 Industry responds to school food rules - Food Business Review
Industry body the Food and Drink Federation says it is "disappointed" by some of the new rules for food in English schools despite widespread support for the standards from consumer groups.
FDF director general Melanie Leech said: "The UK food and drink manufacturing industry fully supports the Government's drive to improve the standards of school meals, and played a constructive part in the school food consultation process.
FDF continues to be committed to a 'whole school approach'.

If the update gets the go-ahead it will mean that food and beverage manufacturers in the leading band of EU countries (which includes the UK, Germany and France) will have to step up recycling requirements from the current 25 per cent of all packaging they produce, to 65 per cent by 2006.

In a speech at the Food and Drink Federation's Annual Dinner on 6 March, Margaret Beckett announced the development of a food and drink industry sustainability strategy.
The Government's Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food, published last December, underlined the need for the food and farming industries to work with Government to secure a profitable future while contributing to a better environment and improved nutrition and public health.

FDF director of communications Julian Hunt said that Which?'s report on marketing to children, which claims that food companies are resorting to increasingly sophisticated and underhand marketing to push unhealthy foods to children, was designed to generate cheap headlines.
The announcement of the new restrictions on food and soft drink advertising to children on TV is the culmination of a three-year debate on the role advertising plays in establishing eating habits.

Sylvia Jay, director general of the Food and Drink Federation, which represents food manufacturers, will leave the organisation at the end of August 2005 after nearly five years in the post to take up a new appointment outside the food sector, to be announced later, the FDF said.
