Topic: Foot Soldiers Star Spangled Funky

Detailed info on Funkadelic's _Uncle Jam Wants You_
Side One is a killer with "Not Just Knee Deep" and "Freak of the Week", I take off half a star, 'cos I can't stand "Holly Wants To Go To California".
Unfortunately, the rest of the side smacks suspiciously of being some hastily assembled studio leftovers, tasty as they are.
"Foot Soldiers" and "Field Maneuvers" are basically excuses for Michael Hampton to get off once again, and he's the clear highlight of those songs.

The singer is the foot soldiers' thrill instructor (possibly the same one as in Uncle Jam, though sung by Clinton instead of Wynne) and exhorts his charges to get Funky.
A soldier who no longer serves in the armed forces is called a veteran, a term which can also apply to a long-serving or experienced soldier who is still in the army.
Infantry that are not soldiers include members of the RAF Regiment of the United Kingdom (technically they are airmen not soldiers), and members of the United States Marine Corps, Royal Marines of the United Kingdom, or other marine forces (who are marines not soldiers; in fact many marines bristle at being called soldiers).

This is one of those wonderful collections of Little-known soul that the Brits at Kent records usually do a good job of compiling, but this time some Americans knew what time it was and dug up some regional and unknown goodies in their own back yards.
"Dap Walk" is a wonderfully funky and catchy tune (reminds one a little of SOULFUL STRUT by Young Holt Unlimited) that one could imagine as background music to a soul Dj rapping (in the old sense of the term) or reading announcements on a Black radio station in the late 60s or early 70s.
Speaking of Rap, we get some early examples of that in the title cut, which is percisely that- a person talking in semi-rhyme on the mike at what appears to be a live party, and "What About You in the Wolrd Today," a positive motivational rap 5 years before the Sugarhill Gang.

This album is commercial and not very funky- I give it 5 stars just because of "Knee Deep" and the excellent work of Michael Hampton on guitar and Phillipe Wynn (a former Spinner) scattin' his way through the song--Nice!!
If you listened to this album without knowledge of who the band was, you would still easily tell that it was a Funkadelic record by the uniqueness of it.
"Foot Soldiers" is more of an instrumental and chant song but done in a very appropriate way.

This is a key release that made a statement and would forever change their musical path.

One of the pilots I talked to fought 120 mph winds and dodged 90 foot seas while attempting to lower a rescue basket to the five crewmen (two of whom eventually died) who had abandoned ship without even a life raft when the fishing vessel La Conte sank suddenly from under them.
Having said all that, it was pleasing to note that the author paid tribute to the brave soldiers on both sides of this terrible battle.

Solid live funk from George & the all stars.
Clinton heads back to the future, evoking grooves of early '70s funk, and bringing back on board the P-funk all-stars.
Musically, the band covers lots of ground: Everything from smooth soul and heavy rock to abstract psychedelia and straight-on funky grooves has a place, and these jarring shifts are what make the album a revolutionary work.

THE SMOOTH YET FUNKY GROOVE OF THIS SONG HAS YET TO BE DUPLICATED IN MY OPINION.
"Foot Soldiers (Star-Spangled Funky)" is an alright number that features great vocals, but is not interesting enough to keep the listener's attention for the duration for the full duration of the song.
While "Uncle Jam" may not be Funkadelic's greatest album.

'Field Manoeuvres' is a hilarious guitar work out, 'Foot soldiers' just plain silly and 'Holly wants to go to California', well what can I say?
But its a Funkadelic ballad so its great fun.
