The Football Alliance was an association football league in England from 1889 to 1892.
It was formed by 12 clubs as a rival to The Football League, which had begun in the 1888-89 season, also with 12 member clubs.
The Alliance covered a similar area to the League, stretching from the Midlands to the North West, but also further east in Sheffield, Grimsby and Sunderland.

The Big Ten Conference and the rest of the Bowl Alliance gave a response to people who are still hoping for a college football playoff system.
After BYU was denied by the Alliance last season despite a 11-1 record, the two conferences challenged the Alliance in front of a Senate sub-committee in May to determine if the Alliance is breaking anti-trust laws.
The Alliance is also pondering a fixed-polling system that will help determine a definite No. 1 and No. 2, instead of relying on the two polls conducted by coaches and college football writers.

After the Justice Department agreed to review that matter, the alliance entered into a revised agreement whereby the 1997 New Year's bowls would be open to any team in the country with a minimum of eight wins or ranked higher than the lowest-ranked alliance conference champion on an at-large basis.
The alliance has contended that meeting the criteria for an at-large berth makes a team eligible to be selected but does not guarantee selection.

There are no costs, fees or moneys required to becoming a member league, only a commitment to play and abide by the common inter-league rules.
Each member league involved with the LSYFA receives one vote to cast on all motions, proposals, etc. LSYFA rules supersede and replace all local park rules that may have been in effect.
