Football Leagues -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-27)
The Football League was founded in 1888 with 12 member clubs, but steady growth and the addition of more divisions meant that by 1959 the League had 92 clubs.
The bottom clubs of The Football League were required to apply for re-election to the League at the end of the season, but this was in most cases a mere formality.
Similarly the two teams that finished at the bottom of Football League Two are relegated to the Conference National and are replaced by the team that finished 1st and the team that won the 2nd–5th place play-off in that division.

The Football League restarted the following season and, despite the Cup win, Derby could not reproduce their pre-War form and were eventually relegated in 1953.
With Maxwell dead from suspected suicide, the club was relegated back to the Second Division in 1991 (which became the First Division a year later when the First Division clubs broke away to form the FA Premier League).

Northwich Vic : The Drill field story - My Football Forum - World Wide Soccer Discussion
Founder members of the Football League Second Division in 1892, Vics realised very quickly that the town's population could not sustain a League club, and dropped into semi-professional competition, where they have been a distinguished presence.
Northwich then produced the memorably tortuous claim that the Drill Field was the oldest football ground in the world to be continuously played on by one club, but that too was punctured by unswayable local historians, who found that the original Vics went bust and reformed in 1890.
At the time, the Conference's unquenchable drive to be professional football's fifth division led them to insist on spectacularly high ground capacities for their clubs: 6,000, capable of being enlarged to 10,000.

Boro were relegated back to the Second Division in 1982, but the club's lowest ebb came in 1986 when they were relegated to the Third Division and found themselves in a financial crisis which looked likely to cause bankruptcy.
This was the second time in the competition that 'Boro found themselves 3-0 down after 25 mins of the return leg and yet still going through as they beat FC Basel 4-3 in the Quarter Finals.
