Football at the Summer Olympics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Football was not on the original modern Olympic Games programme; perhaps unsurprisingly, as international football was still in its infancy in 1896.
With the launch of the Football World Cup in 1930, FIFA did not want the Olympic tournament to overshadow their own showpiece event, so football was dropped completely from the programme for the 1932 Los Angeles Games, although it returned at the 1936 Berlin Games.
FIFA still did not want the Olympics to rival the World Cup, so a compromise was struck that allowed teams from Africa, Asia and Oceania to field their strongest professional sides, while only allowing European and American teams to pick players who had not previously played in a World Cup.

Jiang said the Beijing committee's goals include quintupling the use of natural gas within the city by 2008 and a sharp reduction in the use of dirtier coal in a bid to reduce air pollution.

The Olympics are supposed to cost Londoners around 38p a week, but the Conservatives say that the draft legislation contains no provision for a supplementary rate earmarked specifically for the event; the money will instead be raised as part of the overall council tax precept, which is added on to residents' overall council tax bill.

Worldandnation: U.S. won't block China's bid for 2008 Summer Olympics
Policymakers suggest that the prize of the Olympic Games and the fear of a boycott, similar to the one called by President Jimmy Carter after the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, would probably ride high in the minds of Chinese leaders.
Thus, public opposition to the Olympics would sour the atmosphere -- with no notable gain -- at a moment when the administration is intent on improving relations.
Once China is awarded the Olympics, objectionable behavior on Beijing's part probably would spur calls from groups in the United States for a boycott, calls that would present a Republican administration with a difficult choice.
