Footman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A footman is a male household servant who serves at meals.
The first footman is the highest ranking and serves as deputy butler; he acts as butler in the butler's absence.
In a larger household, the footmen may be assigned specific duties, such as the silver specialist, but usually the footmen perform a range of duties which include serving meals, opening and closing doors, carrying heavy items, or moving furniture for the housemaids to clean behind.

 Review | The Eternal Footman
Gerard Korty, a sculptor of religious art who has been in retreat on a deserted island with his wife (and, consequently, is ignorant of the existence of God's corpse and of the events that ensued from the deity's demise), and Nora Burkhart, a schoolteacher turned flower-truck driver with a passion for mythology.
Gerard's final work is a gigantic sculpture of a human brain, hollowed out and adorned with examples of artistic, intellectual, and compassionate human achievements, to inspire humanity towards the greatness that it all too often falls very short of.
As enjoyable as The Eternal Footman may have been for its story, prose, wit, characters and density of invention, its muddled theist/atheist stance dangerously undermines its premises -- and that of the trilogy as a whole.

 James Morrow: The Eternal Footman
The Eternal Footman is the third novel in James Morrow's trilogy dealing with the death of God.
The series began in Towing Jehovah, in which God's corpse is found floating in the Atlantic and sea captain Anthony van Horne is detailed to tow the corpse to the Arctic.
While The Eternal Footman has moments of humor, notably the discussions between Korty's statues of Martin Luther and Desiderius Erasmus, it is not as blatantly satirical as the previous novels in the series.

BookPage Fiction Review: The Eternal Footman
In The Eternal Footman, Morrow examines how humans can exist in a world that has lost its moral and ethical focus, a world in which the future of faith is complex.
Morrow's novel follows two main characters, Gerard Korty, a sculptor originally hired by the Vatican to build a reliquary for God's remains, and Nora Burkhart, an English teacher who is attempting to find treatment for her ailing son.
The humor and satire in The Eternal Footman is toned down compared to the earlier works in the series; Morrow seems to have replaced them with a more philosophical examination of his subject matter.
