But when you look at the big tax cuts for the rich, and the imposition of "structural adjustment programs" on the poorer countries, you see how silly that idea is. Capitalists will never contribute the necessary means to really fight poverty and disease in the world.
According to Jeffrey Sachs, one of the main themes persuasively argued in Paul Farmer's book is that "the poor are not the victims of their sins, but of their circumstances." Better to say they are victims of ignorance.
Nor is it true as a general principle that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, either relatively or absolutely.

His performance in "For Richer or Poorer" consists almost entirely of him wildly gritting his teeth and looking askance at Alley whenever she says something idiotic.
When all is said and done, the most Amish thing about "For Richer or Poorer" is that it eventually drove me buggy.

'For Richer or Poorer': They're Still Waiting for the Death Part
While the overarching concept is time-tested in romantic drama (see "Witness" from 1985 or the half-century-old "Angel and the Badman"), "For Richer or Poorer" founders in its efforts to fill in the comic details.
But "For Richer or Poorer," promising laughs, never serves up its main course.
Rating: "For Richer or Poorer" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned).

The premise of "For Richer or Poorer" - cue the laugh track - is that Allen is an obnoxious entrepreneur from New York, married to an obnoxious wife (that'd be Alley).
There is zero chemistry between the two, even though "For Richer or Poorer" is an alleged romantic comedy.
People who see "For Richer or Poorer" are the same people who watch all the other shockingly bad movies that get made year after year.

Article: Myths for Richer and Poorer
If you thought the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer, the authors state, here's why: The gap between the richest fifth of Americans and the poorest fifth has widened in 20 years.
Nor did progress take 16 years: Nearly a quarter of the people in the poorest fifth in 1975 moved to a higher income bracket in just a single year.
In other words, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer only if they stay poor.

The film's comic highlight, hands down, has her finally finding her place among the Amish by convincing the elders that adding a little color to the women's clothing would in no way compromise their commitment to the simple life.

BMN Review: For Richer or Poorer (1997)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
"For Richer or Poorer" was intended to be a comedy but failed almost as miserably as "Bean." The jokes were either mediocre or completely missed -- the "Minute Lice" joke (which is older than googleplex-generian Betty White) actually managed to get a few chuckles from Scoot and Bjula.
I, however, sat in utter discomfort as the age-old format of wrong-doers look inside their hearts to heal themselves with the help of the axe-weilding Amish.

The Unofficial Paul Krugman Web Page
The median Swedish family has a standard of living roughly comparable with that of the median U.S. family: wages are if anything higher in Sweden, and a higher tax burden is offset by public provision of health care and generally better public services.
And as you move further down the income distribution, Swedish living standards are way ahead of those in the U.S. Swedish families with children that are at the 10th percentile -- poorer than 90 percent of the population -- have incomes 60 percent higher than their U.S. counterparts.
The point is that it is no accident that strongly conservative views, views that militate against taxes on the rich, have spread even as the rich get richer compared with the rest of us: in addition to directly buying influence, money can be used to shape public perceptions.
