Foras na Gaeilge is the governing body of the Irish language, responsible for the promotion of the language throughout all of Ireland.
The body comprises one half of The North/South Language Body (An Foras Teanga or Tha Boord o Leid) which was formed to oversee the furtherance of the native languages of the island of Ireland.
Foras na Gaeilge promotes Irish, and its counterpart Tha Boord o Ulstèr-Scotch promotes the Ulster Scots language (the Ulster variety of the Scots language [1]) and affairs related to Ulster-Scots culture.

Foras na Gaeilge was established on 2 December 1999 under the terms of the British-Irish Agreement Act, and the main objective of the Foras is to promote the Irish language on the island of Ireland.
As well as taking over the functions of Bord na Gaeilge, a wide range of extra functions were given to the Foras to add to its effectiveness in the promotion of the Irish language.

West Belfast’s Irish language community was dealt another blow yesterday with news that An Chultúrlann has had its funding slashed by Foras na Gaeilge.

“In the meantime it would not be right or proper for Foras na Gaeilge to comment on any one scheme while the process is still ongoing,” added the spokesperson.

I understand from Foras na Gaeilge that allocations totalling €7.8 million have been approved towards various language initiatives in 2003 to date and that further funding may be approved in the near future.
With regard to Gaeltacht areas, the statutory remit of Údarás na Gaeltachta is to create and sustain employment and also to encourage the preservation and the extension of the use of [962] the Irish language as the principal medium of communication in the Gaeltacht.
However for most of the expenditure on Údarás na Gaeltachta, the Gaeltacht housing scheme, Gaeltacht improvement scheme, the social and cultural schemes and island development schemes there are equivalent non-Gaeltacht schemes funded by the Exchequer in non-Gaeltacht areas.
