This Ford Anglia was the first car to be produced at Ford’s new factory at Halewood, Liverpool.
Fords bought the car back three years later and donated it to Liverpool City Museum, as World Museum Liverpool was then known.

Ford knew the Anglia’s production would be hindered by the war effort, and when production ended in 1948 only 55,807 had been built.
In effect the Anglia now looked like a cut down version of the Thunderbird, however the design was certainly no knock off of the larger US Ford iterations; UK engineers had developed the design in combination with wind-tunnel testing and streamlining, the resultant backward slanted window and flat roofline providing class leading rear headroom.
This model would be sold in Europe as the Anglia Sportsman, with the spare type being fitted to the boot lid in an attempt to give the car a more up-market appearance, at the time this being common practice with luxury American models.

Even the 100E, launched in the early 50s as an attempt to drag Ford's small car range into something approaching modernity, was still saddled with an outmoded 3 speed gearbox linked to a sidevalve motor heavily based on the units found in upright Pops and Prefects.
What Ford needed, to tackle the more recent designs from rival BMC and Rootes Group products, was a brand new small car, freshly designed and bang up-to-date.
At the 1959 launch, the new Anglia came in at £589 for the standard model, and £610 for the plusher De Luxe.

It was the Anglia Super which not only employed the 1198cc engine from the Cortina but was also visually more appealing with two-tone paintwork as standard, a distinctive side-stripe, extra chrome trim and a more plush interior.
Launched at the same time as the Anglia was the Prefect 107E which combined the bodyshell of the Prefect 100E with the mechanics of the Anglia 105E.
