The exterior of the Boss 302 featured a front spoiler and flared fenders to accomodate the standard F60 tires which were mounted on 15" Magnum 500 wheels in '69 and standard 15" steel wheels with flat hubcaps in 1970.
The interior of the Boss 429 was outfitted with the interior decor group, high back "Comfortweave" buckets, the "Visibility Group" (parking brake warning light, glove box lock, lights in the ash tray, trunk, and glove box, and an illumated ignition switch), deluxe seat belts, console, tachometer, and a Ford 4 speed shifter.
The Boss 351 engine was a 351 Cleveland four barrel engine with a mechanical cam, solid lifters, 11.0:1 compression ratio, aluminum intake, and a 4 bolt main bearing block.

Starting with the 1969 model year the Ford brought the road racing Mustang program in house by creating the Boss 302 with styling by Larry Shinoda, suspension by specialty builder Kar Kraft, and engine by Ford using the 5.0L block with the new 351 Cleveland heads.
The Boss 302 was rated at 290 HP because insurance companies were beginning to penalize the muscle cars by tacking on higher charges to any car rated over 300 HP.
The Boss 351 engine used the Cleveland block with the heads from the Boss 302.

It was based on Ford's new "Cleveland" block with the same large port, canted valve cylinder heads of the BOSS 302.
Although the stock BOSS 351 engine was "factory"* rated at 330 BHP, the Mustang gained several inches of girth and several hundred pounds of weight in 1971.

Small-block Fords have been produced in displacements ranging from 221 ci to 400 ci, but as you might guess by now, there were a number of different series of these engines.
However, of all the small-block engines Ford has produced, the most popular and frequently modified are the 302, or the 5.0L, small-blocks.
Other differences between these similar-looking engines are main bearing diameters (289/302s measure 2.25 inches, 351Ws are 3 inches); slightly larger rod journals (2.1232 inches compared to 2.311 inches), and the the fact that the 351W uses a longer connecting rod (5.956 inches compared to 5.1550 inches for the 289 and 5.0900 inches for the 302).

Ford knew it would have to come up with a new car to meet the challenge, but without breaking the bank.
The Boss 302 became the Boss 351, and the Mach 1 was equipped with the 429 Cobra Jet engine developing 370 hp.
Ford announced that the 1973 Mustang convertible would be its last ragtop, and this accounted for sales going up to 134,867 units as collectors reached for their pocketbooks.

The Ford BOSS 302 Mustang, built for model years 1969 and 1970, is named for its engine.
Ford was in the process of developing a new 351 cubic inch engine known as the "Cleveland" for 1970.
It was Larry Shinoda, a former GM stylist, now working at Ford who created the car's unique styling and came up with the name BOSS 302 for the car and engine that would go into production so Ford could race it in 1969 and 1970.

The bigger engines (427, 428 and 429) were all offered in later model years when the body was wider.
Ford 429/460 V8 I measured my 351-C fairly carefully - It is still on the engine stand.

There was the inevitable search of junkyards and swap meets for the popular '69-'76 351 Windsor heads, with their slightly larger intake ports and valves combined with 60.4cc combustion chambers for good compression.
Until the modern aluminum heads debuted in the ’80s, the ’69-’70 351 Windsor head (left, compared to the 289 Hi-Po on right), with its slightly larger valves, was the head of choice for Ford small-block builders.
The big difference between the cast-iron 351 Windsor and the new GT-40 is found on the exhaust side, where the modern aluminum head (right) features noticeably larger exhaust ports.

The way this curtain flow area works in the 4 valve per cylinder application is this.
The performance gain with the 4 valves per cylinder is not so much at peak valve lift, (an engine is only at peak valve lift for a very few crankshaft degrees), but the flow advantage it has all the way up to full lift and all the way down after full lift.
This is when the cylinder is getting more fully charged on the intake stroke and more fully excavated when on the exhaust stroke.
